The Forgotten Children

Greetings! This is a literate roleplay in the following setting:

After the third World War in 2050, every country and government fell into anarchy, and every form of order was abolished. Eventually, however, the richer parts of the worlds began to develop again, and they established themselves into new nations. This story takes place in the land of Magnam, which is where the north-eastern part of the United States used to be.

It is now the year 2112. World population has swelled to about 15 billion, and Mother Nature's resources are nearly used up. Even with new breakthroughs in technology and harnessing clean energy sources, there is barely enough space and food for all the hungry humans on the planet. Population growth cannot be afforded. Replacement rate is the only thing that the Earth can handle right now. Therefore, in the country of Magnam, a strict policy has been released: For the safety of future generations, families may have no more than two children. The government told its people, "To give Mother Nature a chance to heal, familes are only allowed two children. For the greater good." This said, it was frowned upon to have more than two children. It was said that any henceforth third children would be taken to work for the government, to prove that they were worth living, and that the families of the child would have to pay a small fine. What the corrupt government did not tell its people was that the soldiers who found the illegal children were allowed to do with them as they please. The soldiers at this time were even more corrupt than the rest of the government, and often functioned on their own. They usually kept older children around as slaves or killed them for sport, and the younger children they would raise as brutal monsters with no wish other than to exterminate all third children of Magnam.

As with all rules, though, this law has been broken time and time again. The government noticed this, and it began sending out routine checks of every town and city every five years. Any third children found will be taken, and their families punished. Still, a few people continued having third children, but they had to be hidden away or assume false identities, especially when the brutal soldiers ran their checks.

But one can only hide for so long before being found.


This is the story of the illegal children, the forgotten children, the children who do not officially exist.

((One last thing: As you may or may not have noticed, this roleplay is VERY loosely based upon the world of the Shadow Children series by the incredibly talented Margaret Peterson Haddix. We borrowed the ban of third children from this series, but as far as we know, nothing else. And we completely credit Ms. Haddix for this idea

Our story begins a few days before the routine check for illegal children. The soldiers who search are very thorough, so it is difficult, nearly impossible, to hide every child. Sometimes people living on the the farms that surround the city agree to help hide a few children on their land, but only for a few days. No one wants to risk being found helping the "forgotten children," as they are often called. So at this time, about a dozen of these children are preparing to leave their families and stay on the farmland for a few days while the search in the city is being executed. They will not speak to the farmers or their families, and they are allowed to eat only as much as they need. Right now, our characters are packing their few things and saying goodbye to their families. They might see them again in a few days, if all goes well. But then again, they might not.

Arianna Walker
It was nearly time to leave. It would take several hours to walk to the farm where Arianna and several other children would be spending their next few days. With her she had only herself and her clothes, which were in the green-gray tones of the city and boots made for running, just in case.
"Goodbye," said Arianna's mother, pushing a lock of curly hair out of her daughter's face. "Stay safe. Stay hidden. You know what they'll do if they find you, right?" she said, hugging her.
Arianna nodded grimly. "Yes, Mother. I'll be fine," she said with a reassuring smile.
Her mother sighed and kissed her forehead. "You're right. You're a big girl; I can trust you to take care of yourself. I'll see you in a few days, alright?"
Arianna nodded again. "Of course. I'll see you and everyone else soon." She smiled again, and with that, set off to the edge of the city at a leisurely pace. She could afford to take her time.

Alek slipped a grey jacket over his white shirt, checking the laces on his boots. His siblings were out at their jobs in the city and he didn't exactly want to risk telling them goodbye.
"Alek, be careful. Please. We want to see you back soon," his mother said. Pressing a kiss to his forehead and placing a bag into his hand, she nodded with small tears in her eyes. "Don't forget to be very careful with Vivian. You know this is her first time in this."
He gave a small nod, calling, "Viv! Don't forget your backpack."
His father pressed something cold in his palm which he found to be a small hunting knife.
"Thank you, father," he whispered, returning a tight hug from his father.
"We'll be right here waiting for you both," he said, giving him a gentle shove toward the door.
He slipped it into his pocket and waited at the door for his little sister. They had to get moving.

Vivian stuck her short arms through her jacket and zipped it quick, slipping her backpack over her shoulders moving towards her brother. She looked back at her parents but stayed quiet. She didn't like the idea of leaving at all but she knew she had to. She looked up at her brother and nodde ready to leave.

"You have a few days of food and snacks in the bag, children," their mother says before pressing her knuckles to her lips, eyes full of tears.
Alek bites his lips, nodding as he takes Viv's hand as leads them out of the house. "Now, Viv. You have to listen to me from now on. I don't care if you don't want to. You have to. I know how this works. Just... be ready." He squeezes her hand as they walk through the grass and up a hill toward the farm. It was a short walk and from here they could even see it.

Vivian was chewing on her lip as they walked. She hated all of this. Her eyes were glassy, because she kept blinking back the tears of leaving. Her small hand squeezed her brothers looking at him. She was nervous of the unknown ahead of her

The day was cool, but the sun was bright. He led them as carefully as he could, hoping no one would notice them. Soon, they were near the farm and they stepped onto the dirt surrounding the fence.

Viv looked at her brother then the farm ahead of them. This is where they were to stay?

Arianna's pace quickened as she went along her path, silently moving through backstreets. She was soon steadily jogging, and she reached the gates outside the farm without much effort. She looked around and grinned, she saw a few other children already there.

Alek helped Viv over the short fence and slipped over himself. A few of the other kids were already heading inside the barn just next to the house. He glances around, recognizing some of the children from the city nearby.
