"My friend, your desire, is the bringer of life, the Gift of the Goddess."

It was over.

Peace at last, if one could call it that. How long would it last?

Another victory for ShinRa. The glory we must feel.

Her lip curled.

Oh yes, all hail the mighty ShinRa: proud butchers of mankind.

Still, she and her friends were alive. Well, most of them, anyway. Lives had inevitably been lost. Some she had watched fall, others ripped apart in flurries of fire and dirt. Those who hadn’t died simply lived on, many only by the barest definition. Breathing. Existing. That was about it. This “princess” was among them, her crown cast aside.

Lost in nothing but a baggy shirt she had “acquired” from Blake, Kleio was draped across the couch. She was on her back, head tipped over one of the arms. Across the majority of the cushions, pale legs decorated with scrapes. Her gaze was upon the ceiling, mind upon the battlefield.

Pools of red in trampled grass, that’s what she was seeing. Words burbled from mouths that spewed life. Scattered allies and foes alike. All people, begging for their mothers. Even the proudest. Even those she had thought could not cry. Their lives had reduced now to names on stone. All evidence of their existence would be packed in bubble-wrap and boxes , only to be sold off, or hidden away in attics.

Her half-lidded eyes were blurry with exhaustion, but she forced them to stay open. She didn’t trust them to close. The ceiling seemed cloudy, her vision dithering between present and past. It showed her flashes of blood, fire, the glitter of painted blades. She still smelled the soot, the gunpowder.

”H-Hm…”

It felt distant, muffled behind echoes of shots and explosions. Sandwiched in the middle, an endless whine like feedback from a microphone. Screams, some the last sound bodies breathed. A simple ‘Hm,’ somewhere beyond the mess. It was the first sound she had made since their return. Well, that which was voluntary. She did not think vomiting counted, nor sobs. Despite how they had scrubbed her throat raw, she would deny them both if asked. The hair pasted to her cheeks by silver tracks could be lied about. After all, it remained wet from her third shower. She considered a fourth. The stink of death had not scrubbed off yet.

How long had she lay here? Goddess knows. Long enough to have fitted twice. MAKO and stress were not happy partners. She had awoken each time with a concerned loved one at her side. Each time, she had lied about being fine. “I’m fine,” she had told faces that tried to understand, but never could. Anything to be left to the mercy of her mind. “You’re your Father’s daughter,” her mother had remarked with a sad little smile.

My father’s daughter, indeed. How proud he must be. His little girl has been to war.

Minerva had tasted human blood. Kleio had held her close back there; had let her drink as deeply as she liked.

She will surely thirst for more.

"What is one more drop?" purred the blade, propped against the opposite wall. It had been banished to the other side of the room. Kleio would not look upon it. The blood that caked its once-spotless body threatened to make her hurl again.

Funny, that. Shouldn't she revel in the taking of a life? Murder was in her genes. A weapon built for it—that’s all a Rhapsodos was, right?

Pretty killers.

Never docile.

XXXXX Did it always hurt to look back and see how something has changed you? He couldn't help but feel as if he was one of few survivors that felt like this. "SOLIDER honour? Where is the honour in cutting down our own people, our friends and heroes? SOLIDER honour is a lie... ShinRa is a lie..."

"...I am a lie..."

He couldn't help the thoughts that plagued his mind like a parasite, feeding upon the negative emotions that were being stored within him. He wasn't even sure how to handle a situation like this. Sure, he has killed before, but never like that. Never has he fought so hard against his friends for survival... And then there was his condition...

Jinn Sagaro walked along side the two reasons for him even being up at this point. Jak and Keira Sagaro were the most adorable pair of pups within Edge. They were a special mix breed of North Corel Husky and Gongaga Shepard, an interesting mixture that was given as a gift to him by some unknown admirer. Whomever it was might have just saved the poor man's life by giving him a companion. They were best suited for the wild, fending off animals around their size, but that would come when they grow up.

"Come on you two, you know they have a thing against animals here." It took some time for him to scoop up the playful critters with one arm, his main hand sealed within a cast and held up by a sling around his shoulder. He put each into their own pocket. Jak poked his head back out, always the curious little devil, and the SOLIDER had to pet him back inside before continuing his destination. Being in a domesticated area like Edge was calming to Jinn, but it also set his nerves on fire. His instincts told him that he needed to be active, waiting and able to handle whatever may be next. It had took him some time even leave his apartment without all of his weapons. Still to this day, he keep his two favorites hanging from their holsters.

Walking into the lobby of what was presumed as 'The best place in Edge to stay.' and strolled over to front desk. "Good day. Would you kindly send a breakfast platter up to the penthouse? Make sure to induce a fruit basket along with it." He slipped the clerk a tip, a pretty big on at that, and made his way to the elevator.

Standing outside of her room, Jinn raised a hand to knock. "Room service." And with that he stepped in. He knew that those inside would know him by his voice alone, so their wasn't any real danger. Plus he was certain they all wish to throw away their arms and stay out of a fight for as long as they could. He took a moment to look over the vast spacing of the room and it was a grand sight to be hold. The penthouse was an interesting mixture of colors that seemed strange to have in a place like Edge, but then again he didn't care that much. He was here for one thing alone really.

"Well hello there Princess. How are we feeling today?" He smirked as he approached her on the couch. He gently moved her legs out of the way so that he could sit down beside her. Once they felt themselves come to a rest, Jak and Keira moved from their confinements to properly explore they new environment. It took them only a few moments to notice their favorite red head and attack. Jinn could only laugh as they rushed to cover her in their slobber and love.

"My friend, your desire, is the bringer of life, the Gift of the Goddess."

Kleio’s gaze drifted to the door when it opened. In her ears, the ghost of his voice. It had taken a while to cut the queue of memories accosting her, but had done so in time. Convenient, really. Kleio had a proven defence mechanism against those who caught her off guard: it involved fiery missiles and pain. Lots of it. Luckily for Jinn, she had realised it was him before the spell had finished changing. On any other day, perhaps she would have thrown it anyway.

Him…? Why is…? No… Not important right now.

For one reason: there were more urgent matters to be thinking of. First, her eyes were hurriedly wiped, her breaths forced to steady. The latter action was the hardest. Thankfully, some breathlessness could be attributed to resisting screaming over healing wounds.

Second order of business: where there was Jinn, there were puppies. As cute as they were, their love was a thing to be defended against. By now, she knew how to deal with it. Don’t scream, don’t flail; just roll over on to your front until they have greeted you. Her transition was aided greatly by Jinn's effort to rearrange her legs: just roll while her feet are placed to the floor. Easy. Well, sort of. Of course, even this kind of movement came complete with mass protest from her various injuries: slashes to her front and back, bullet-sprinkled skin. Cure materia could only do so much. Bandages bound her beneath the shirt. They even spanned to where fabric couldn’t hide: legs, arms, but their amount was only minor.

To think, this is what it looked like to be ‘lucky.’

She spoke through the pain, breathless.

”Y-Yes… hello to you both,” but left Jinn’s question unanswered for now. She would have to think on it some, whereas her body was keen to let fault be known. Hers was a voice fighting to be normal, to sound proud and haughty. It came across bland. A ghost’s whisper, straining to feign life, thickened by hidden tears. The traitor.

A twitch, a stifled whine. No complaints—was this not everything she deserved? Ever twinge, every trample. There were others who had come away far worse. What Kleio didn’t realise was that, among those who had suffered at her hands, there were also others who weren’t seventeen-year-old girls. Fewer still were war-virgins.

“You’ll scar up nice, kid. Wear them with pride,” she had been told by a morale-boosting moron. “You’ve done fine work today.”

Well, if a superior said so…

Her lip curled.

These were her badges for the taking of lives. She flinched, winced. How glad she was that she had turned over. Pressed to the chair’s arm, she was sure her eyes were watering again.

XXXXX "Alright guys, chill out. Go play with Luna or something, daddy and auntie Leio are having a conversation." He had to snap his fingers to calm the excited pups and send them on their way, the quick puffs of their breath fading away as the two of them sat alone. He snow maned male was caught between his decisions.

On one hand, he wanted nothing more than to just sit there and comfort her. Even with his own injuries he could tell that she was fighting for control. Sure he had fought in that battle that shook the world and yes, he had been harmed just as much as any of them. In fact, other than Kelio, no one knew just how much pain he had endured. He was still picking up the piece of his already shattered psyche. Had his doctors not checked him out, he would still be held within ShinRa headquarters having people poke and prod at him.

His second option was one that he had chosen often and was directly related to the first. It involved him being the biggest derp that he could and bringing some sort of smile to her face. This method usually ended up with him getting his head beat in. It is sad to say that the thought of it actually brought a shadow of a smile to his face. Though, looking at the sight of his battle-sister, it quickly faded.

"Leio..."

Whatever he decided to do, he would need her to cooperate with him first. As gently as his body would allow, he leaned over beside her. He placed a hand on her shoulder, his eyes staring at the current of red luscious hair that covered her face. He smirked a bit as he used a finger to move aside one of her curls. He couldn't ignore the pain that was held on her face, the sorrow that clouded her eyes, but then again, her eyes were just like his. He knew the look of the Mako that flourished in her bloodstream just like any SOLIDER. Though, he knew the sorrow and regret as well. It had clung with him for a while so he knew already how to deal with it.

"Peekaboo. I see you." He smirked as he ended up taking the latter option, it was the one he knew best.

He leaned in a bit more to lightly press his lips against the fat of her cheek. He adored the smell of her, even if the scent had faded recently. His gesture wasn't one of surprise, he had openly admitted on many occasions his feelings for her. He knew already that it would be difficult for them to be together, their lifestyles contradicting as they were, but he didn't out right care really. He loved Kleio for whom she was, not her family name. He just wished that she could eventually see this as well.

He had moved away so that she could have her privacy and also to escape the range of her fury. Crossing his legs over one another, Jinn Sagaro picked up a copy of LOVELESS that was resting upon an end table. He was silent as he begun the first act, though he was just doing such to kill the time needed for Kleio to gather her wits.

"My friend, your desire, is the bringer of life, the Gift of the Goddess."

”Dolt… I-I’m no child,” she mumbled, her glare weary and tearful.

Still, this was no protest. His was a touch she was drawn to right now. A touch she had rejected from others, at that. Luna had been refused, scowled at, stormed away from by a daughter who wouldn’t speak. Luna’s care had since come from a distance, except for when Kleio fitted and screamed. It had been some time since the last. That was some time the princess had spent silently staring upward. Fine by her, until now.

One would think that with Kleio in such a bitter mood, Jinn’s movements were practically suicide. However, for the first time, he wasn’t slapped away by swords and fireballs. Quite the opposite.

They felt fine, the lips on her cheek. Warm. Soft. They took with them old tears, leaving the pale expanse cold. Before now, it was a chill she would have been glad of. She had never been a fan of unauthorised touch. It was always a bad idea to lean over her, to touch her from such a dominant position. Everyone who knew her knew she would struggle like a cornered animal. Fear put her at her most unpredictable; discomfort made her dangerous. Despite the pompous princess act, Kleio’s psyche was just as simple as anyone else’s: she was no volatile monster—just easy to scare. Who in her position wouldn’t be? She had lived her life untouchable, shielded by Daddy’s wing. Without it, she was open to reality’s chill. If she could be touched, she could be hurt.

Maybe it wasn’t as bad as she thought.

Maybe touch wasn’t a thing to be rubbed away. Right now, it felt comforting. Jinn’s simple kiss had, for that brief moment, substituted her missing pieces with his own. For those few seconds, she had felt something close to whole. Protected and untouchable again. The way it should be.

Without the usual “How dare you?”, without a scowl, her eyes found him. They watched him read, widened when they saw the book in his hands. There was no need to read the title. Since her childhood, she had known and loved that faded cover like a sibling. There had even been times when she had needed to compete with it as such. Some days, it had even been all she had.
She moved, but not to strike him.

“Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess,” so went the quote. She would live to her name. Following some struggle against stinging wounds and weak limbs, she crawled to him. So much for “I’m no child.” Like an attention-seeking cat, a child waking from a nightmare, she sought proximity. Once close enough, she tangled herself up in him, a hand upon his thigh, the other beneath her head as it rested upon his lap. Of course, her back was to his stomach. She could not have him see her face, nor the blush that faintly coloured it. Loose red hair spilled over his legs and knees, wet like blood, three-times-washed and stinking of cherries.

XXXXX 'Infinite in mystery is the gift of the Goddess...' He thought over each word carefully, his mind taking apart the meaning and feeling behind them all. He, however, was pulled from this thought as he felt the weight on the sofa shift. He shifted an eye to glance at her as she poked her head up to look at him. He had to tried hard to hold back the snicker that wanted to escape at her expression. 'Yes I read, I read quote a lot thank you very much. I even enjoy poetry once and a blue moon... '

He had inadvertently flinched as she moved closer to him. Despite being a SOLIDER, despite fighting in a war that could have very well ended the world as he knew it, despite getting such treatment on an almost daily basis, Jinn hated when Kleio slapped him. It made him feel stupid, feeble minded and weak. He couldn't exactly form how it felt in wording, for most of his mind has been lost to the Mako and the Lifestream. He was surprised however as she crawled into his lap, back pressed to his stomach.

"Uh..."

He was drawing up a blank of what was going. It was restricting his ability to respond properly. It was most certainly awkward, this was for sure. Never has Kleio done such an act, only in his wildest dream has this happened. Thinking quick, he bite down on his tongue. A wave of pain exploded and sent a shiver through his body. Yup, most certainly not a dream! Then what the flying ******** is going on!? Is she really that ill that she is not thinking straight? Perhaps it would be best if I sooth her, try to calm down her insanity...

Shutting the book properly and placing it back upon the end table, the older male cleared his throat before beginning. "Infinite in mystery is the gift of the Goddess
We seek it thus, and take to the sky. Ripples form on the water's surface. The wandering soul knows no rest... LOVELESS Act 1"
He didn't need the book to tell him what the words were. He had them committed to memory long ago, back when he first joined ShinRa in fact. Though, he didn't remember much of back then... He did remember those words the most. He slowly went through the different acts, his voice ringing with passion with each word. Soon he found himself in a trance, his body acting upon its own accord as he recited line after line. He hand moved slowly over the red curtain that spilled over his leg. He even played with it by twirling his index finger around a curl.

Strangely, he felt at peace. As if the war never happened, none of the evil wrought was committed. It felt as if he was on his fantasy... It was the only way to explain the pure joyous smile on his face.

"My friend, your desire, is the bringer of life, the Gift of the Goddess."

In a daze, the word ”Daddy?” left her lips.

An easy mistake for one in her mental state. It did not last long. The men’s voices had their differences, after all. Still, she did not retreat. She lay, listened, remembered, eyes wide.

Her father would read to her just like this. She recalled it with a sad little smile. If one could call it that, that is. Something tugged briefly at the corners of her lips, twitched. Then it was gone.

”Infinite in mystery is the gift of the Goddess…”

In her ears, two voices spoke together. She could not help but recite along with them, monotone, a tearful mutter. LOVELESS. She couldn't resist it. When reading it to her, that was one of the few times Genesis would actually develop some kind of tone. That same passion as Jinn's was there. Likely, her father's monotone murmurs held even more, voice warm only for her, soft, soothing.

Just like this. He would hold her close as she lay upon his lap, stroke her hair. He would wrap her up with a kiss upon her forehead. For the longest time, sleep took her midway through the second act. Since she was a baby, having her father read LOVELESS would soothe her. Nothing and nobody else would do. Strange; it was hardly a child-appropriate text. He was hardly a child-friendly man. Still, nothing had stopped her crying faster. Nothing put her into a more peaceful sleep.

It was no secret that she, like Genesis, loved the poem. Little had served to excite her as a child, but nothing had done so quite like being taken to the play by his side. Everyone she met knew she was a fan. Considering her name, it would have been more of a surprise if she didn’t like it.

Still, she had never said why. She had never said why one book could mean so much to her; that one important ‘why’ that turned ‘like’ into ‘love’.

”H-How… did you know?” Her voice was little above a whisper, wispy and unstable. ”I never… I n-never told you…”

To know she would appreciate the thought was one thing. It was obvious that someone would find a little comfort in something they liked. How did he know it would bring her comfort now, at a time so cataclysmic? It was quite some pressure to put on a piece of text. To know it would ease her tense muscles, calm her mind, give her something to hold on to—to know all that was something else. For the time being, she was pacified. Tranquilised, almost. Her body was a limp weight in his lap.

To think, she had thought of ending such a beautiful life. Now the thought made her breaths tremble. Her eyes were bitten by a fresh wave of tears. These would not be held in. Kleio hadn't the strength to battle them.

Still, crying or not, Jinn's efforts had been fruitful.

He had saved her. Saved her with the memory of better days.

XXXXX Reading the text over again, Jinn could see why Genesis loved the story. It filled him with a sensation of pride and power, even made him believe that he was a character or two within the tale. He gently closed the book as she spoke to him, accidentally interrupting his flow.

"Know what? That you love this book more than the air you breath? You make it kind of obvious." He smirked as he recalled the times she had gone out of her way to ensure the book was preserved in pristine conditions. Usually it meant that he and Blake had to suffer for it, mainly him in most cases. He reached down and wiped away on stray tear from her plump cheeks. "As for the affect on you, I sort of winged it and hoped for the best. It is sort of my thing." He shrugged and smiled his classic iconic smile.

He looked up as he heard a knock on the door, his smile fading a bit as a look on confusion took over. "Room service for Mr. Sagaro." His face had brightened as he heard. "Ah yes. I forgot about that wrapped up in the wonders of LOVELESS. Excuse me..." As Kleio allowed him the freedom of movement once more, he had strolled over and answered the door. He invited the busier inside before closing the door. "Everything is as I requested right?" The employee nodded and smirked, his eyes sparkling a bit at being in the room of not one but two SOLIDERs. "Yes, sir Mr. Sagaro." The young chap had went over and uncovered the platter that had to be carted in. "Two breakfast platters, a large variation in what is available to you and Ms. Rhapsodos. Three full butter milk pancakes, three Belgian waffles, three pieces of lovely french toast, four different kinds of meat, six different forms of eggs, hash browns, home fries, chips, and of course..." He paused from the list he had memorized, his hands reaching under the cart he had brought in and extracting a beautifully arranged fruit basket, "As requested, a fruit basket as well."

"Excellent, most excellent!" He had put his hand on the boy's shoulder and gave him a quick shake. "Now, here is what I want you to do. I would like for you personal to make sure no one comes in here. Ms. Rhapsodos isn't feeling very well and she would like to rest as much as she can. You think you can handle that Skippy?" Oh how excited the boy was to be touched by a 'hero'. It made Jinn sick really to see the lies that ShinRa had spread about what happened. He had to fight to keep his face normal, but damn did he do a good job. It was almost a second nature now. He wasn't even paying attention to what 'Skippy' was saying. After the first few words, Jinn was already leading him to the door. He had tossed a tip at the busier before closing the door on the stammering youth.

Sighing, a look of exhaustion took over the male's face. "The s**t we put up with, I swear..." He shrugged it off and moved the cart over to Kleio, placing it just in front of the sofa. He took one of the plates given and began to pile it up with some of her favorites that he could remember off of the top of his head. He even took care to cut up everything for her, a sweet gesture that sort of took over out of instinct. "Might as well eat your fill now Princess, who knows when you will want to even eat again." He took his place next to her, an apple within his grasp. Taking a quick bite, Jinn enjoyed the taste that filled his mouth. The juices were ripe and the apple crunchy, one of his personal favorite attributes of apples really.

"My friend, your desire, is the bringer of life, the Gift of the Goddess."

Normally she might have laughed at being referred to as ‘Ms. Rhapsodos’.

Normally she would have smirked, teased, nibbled flirtatiously on food she would have gladly accepted. Even this aristocratic lady hated waste. Surprisingly, Angeal’s influence was only partly to blame. Lady or not, petite or not, Kleio was an eater. At home, she didn’t always get the chance to enjoy edible food. Her approach was to stock up whenever she had the chance. What was there to lose? With a lifestyle like hers, she would burn it off anyway. Storing was better than starving.

Here she was, presented with the rich; the luxurious. In other words, all the home comforts she was used to when Luna was banned from the kitchen.

Inviting aromas were cloying. Her stomach threatened to flip. Then it did. She rolled over as one might when in a mood, her back to Jinn, her body fetally curled towards the sofa’s back. Anyone who did not know her well might think she was sulking. The guttural “N-Ngh…” she uttered said otherwise. It was beautiful food, she could not deny. On any other day, her mouth was sure to have been watering, especially at the mention of those pancakes. Waistline be damned!

The plate was left untouched. One dry heave. Bile bittered her throat, her tongue. She tasted iron. Thick red. It had splattered her face, her lips. The fool she was, she had licked her lips back there. Swallowed it. A fallen comrade painted her throat crimson. A hand rose to rest at her neck.

Traitor. M-Monster.

There was no doubt about it: Genesis had been right.

”SOLDIER isn’t a job for a young lady.”
“You will kill. Most likely innocent lives.”

From the start, he had known she was wrong when she said she knew better. He hadn’t been the only one.

”…it’s not a very good place for a young lady like yourself…”

Voices, voices. All those warnings. More voices to crowd her already-teeming head.

”Just understand the risk. You may die…”

As if I… should be so lucky.

She hadn’t even the will to snap them away. Just to curl up tighter, tighter, like a restless cat. This one did not purr. The sounds she made were discomfited whimpers, wet, shaken. Her stomach squeezed as that persistent aroma bothered her a second time. Was it nausea or hunger? Either way, her body convulsed. Heaved again. Undignified. Foul-tasting. There was nothing left to throw up—she had already taken care of that, much to her own disgust. All she had left was a burning stomach and a raw throat. Punishment. ‘Perfect’, she was sure said the fallen whose blood she had tasted.

No way she could eat. Not after that.

Not ever.

The last thing she wanted to give her stomach was fresh ammunition. It did not want it. It did not deserve it. Her body settled for a shimmer of sweat upon freshly-scrubbed skin. Faster breathing. Shallower breathing. Colour-blotches to blind her. She trembled. Twitched. Could feel her heart thrust, throb, seize.
