Xelannis did not usually travel beyond the Sanctum's walls unless specifically requested of him. There was so seldom a need to, when nearly all of his day-to-day life could be handled within those neatly defined borders. Today he'd made it out only because of proximity. Two of the other teenagers near in his age, a boy and a girl he'd known for nearly a decade now, happened to have escaped to a nearby park area for what Xel strongly suspected was a 'date.'

Oh, the things they might regret doing, if left unsupervised.

He'd gone with them to ensure against any unexpected accidents, and fortunately enough, they didn't seem to mind. Davoss, the boy, was a fidgety lad with the attention span of a rodent, but he was good natured and usually chipper. Xelannis considered him a friend, and he had a full page's worth of notebook to himself, in which Xel kept track of any important, but possibly forgettable details about him. Davoss had teasingly called him a 'stalker' once. That was in his notebook too.

The girl, Rynah, was a touch more sullen than her boyfriend while he was near, and far more so with anyone else. Xel had the sensation that she didn't like him anywhere near as much as Davoss did. Fortunately, she wasn't a complainer and seemed content to ignore him to the best of her ability for the evening.

The pair had made their way up into the looming, twisting branches of a tall tree. Xelannis could see them from where he sat on a bench, just a handful of paces away. Following too closely, particularly when it displeased Rynah so, felt undeniably rude, on his part, so he kept his distance for a time, instead opting to enjoy the sun's warm rays, the crisp whip to the wind, and the familiar comfort of his quill and book in his hands.

"Hey, Xelannis."

By the time the voice came, Xel had almost entirely forgotten that he'd come along as the metaphoric third wheel, there only to keep his friends from trouble. He looked up with a quiet, inquisitive hum, and promptly had a handful of something shoved under his nose.

"Look what we found in the tree! It's- Hey!"

The sound that escaped him upon closer inspection of the thing was not a squeal, except the high-pitched, short, back-of-throat noise may have seemed like one to passerby. In the same moment as that regrettable sound escaped him, Xel snapped his book shut, and cracked the back cover of it against some combination of the unsuspecting diascia's body and his friend's hand. The creature went flying across the grass, and Davoss had just enough time to shoot him an indignant look before he chased after it.

Mirin scratched at the back of her head, looking around at the people she didn't know in a place she had never been. She jumped on a ship and sailed over to Yael to prove to her brothers that she could do something on her own, and she was going to come back home with a shiny new critter to show off for her troubles, but she... hadn't exactly thought out her plan. She barely had money for an inn, let alone the payment for the ship back to the mainland, and everyone was still staring at her like she had three heads. She guessed with them being just yaeli for so long they still didn't know how to treat an outsider. It had her lips pursing.

She sat down on a bench under a tree and reclined, waiting for inspiration to strike, or so she guessed. She was nearly asleep when she heard a commotion and some sort of squeal before something sailed into the air and across the grass. She snapped her head to follow whatever it was in the air and followed to where it landed, picking it up from the ground. It was gross. Slimy and with some sort of shell. "Is this yours?" She asked the group of people, her face distorted as she felt the slime sliding down her hand.

One strange, unexpected foreign thing was more than enough to occupy the entirety of the evening, as far as Xelannis was concerned. As his gaze followed the path the diascia had taken through the air, and as Davoss darted to retrieve it, he couldn't help but notice that at the end of that particular journey stood someone far less innocuous than a mollusk. If it was just a girl, her appearance wouldn't have meant much. Girls certainly weren't rare, and they were only occasionally interesting, but this one was a foreigner. He'd never seen a mainlander before.

As Davoss came near enough to retrieve his creature, he too seemed wary and suddenly hesitant. He'd meant to reach out, collect the diascia, and that would be that, but the girl's brazen approach and seeming thoughtlessness caught him off guard. "'Yours,'" Davoss repeated, as if the word was unfamiliar to him and he was especially slow. It took precious seconds for him to form anything more. "Not- not mine, no. It came from the tree, just over there." He didn't look at where he gestured, but instead kept his attention fixed on the girl- the Shifter. Xelannis knew her race only because he'd read about them and their appearance, but he'd never had the chance to see one. He expected it was the same for Davoss.

His comrade's words sounded like enough of a bridge for his own curiosity, and Xel stepped nearer himself, for purely academic purposes. "Where did you come from," he prompted. "How did you get here? Do they really allow your kind to simply travel over the ocean?"

Then, more to Davoss than to her, "What if she's diseased? There could be all manner of things from the mainland harmful to us." Not that the Shifter girl looked particularly ill, but it wasn't as though he had any previous encounters to base it off of. "She's so peculiar looking. Her eyes look dead. Shifters can't all be blind can they? Is this normal, do you think?"

Once that was all out in the air, his focus pinned back to her. The expression on his face wasn't quite a smile, but neither was it especially unkind. "What's your name?"

Mirin watched as these strange people snatched the creature out of her hand like she was the one who was gross and slimy and not the whatever-it-was that they had just thrown through the air, and then felt immediately dumbstruck as one of them spewed out a stream of questions, like she didn't have perfectly working ears of her own.

"Um, excuse you." She started. "I am not diseased, first of all; and yes they allow my kind to travel." Her kind. What did that even mean? Shifters? The entirety of Tendaji? Where had this bunch been living if they didn't know that people have been traveling to Yael for over a year now? She rested her hands on her hips, her indignation showing. "I'm surprised they even let you out of the house with those manners." Mirin wasn't even one to be considered particularly polite, but even she knew better than to call someone diseased right in front of them and tell them they had dead eyes. "You're one to talk with your eyes black and glowing. That's just not normal." She shot back. She came all this way just for some punks to criticize her race as a whole and insult her. And frankly, I'm not sure you deserve to find out my name." She crossed her arms over her chest, her hip cocked to the side. She just reeked of attitude by now.

Sorry! I have to relearn her again so I'm super rusty. Also let me know if you don't want to keep this one going (idk if your boy already grew or not since this RP)
