"O-oh, thank you..." His voice trailed off and he ducked his head sheepishly at the compliments that Lona paid to him. He knew how kindheated Lona was, she was always complimenting others or giving them reasons to smile, but he never seemed to expect the sweet words from her. It threw him through a loop and while he was always thankful for them, he never thought that he was deserving of them.

His head lifted at Lona's questions, and he looked away sheepishly. "W-well, I could have asked them, but I didn't want to trouble them. Plus doing all of the work my self let me learn a lot about cultivating plants and how to make the soil fit their needs. It was k-kinda fun, you know?

"Why do you go on these walks so often, Lona? I feel like I always see you leaving..."

Lona listened to Fai with genuine intrigue, nodding as she listened to his reasoning for doing so much hard work on his own. Honestly, she really should have known that Fai's reason for doing it all by himself was so he could learn about the process on his own and not "inconvenience" others with his request for help. He was such a sweet boy, and he was always experimenting and coming up with hypotheses to learn about the world around him. She should have expected that as his reason, really. "As long as you enjoyed yourself, that's all that matters at the end of the day, isn't it? I'm glad you had fun, Fai."

By now the two were almost halfway to the edge of the herd's territory, not too far away should Fai wish to return for any reason and not too far to make him uncomfortable. Hopefully they'd be out for a few hours, enjoying the weather.

The cream colored mare turned her head at Fai's voice and she gave a thoughtful smile. "Why do I go? Hmm... I think it's because I'm still not very familiar with the area. Going on my walks lets me find new resources that I can gather later on for the herd as well, which can be helpful. I also think that it's important to take time to just relax and enjoy yourself. Walking calms me and give me time to my own thoughts, but I'm always happy to have company." Lona continued forward, giving Fai a gentle nudge to reassure that his presence truly was welcome. "Plus, sometimes I'll see something I haven't before, and that's always exciting."

Fai smiled timidly at the praise that Lona offered him. It was always nice being in her presence. She was kind and thoughtful, always speaking the words that needed to be heard by those she spoke them to. She was a blessing to the herd; a blessing that he was positive she didn't know she was. Fai considered himself blessed to know who the kind and gentle mare, someone that he was sure to do great things for the herd in one way or another.

Fai remembered when Lona came to the herd. She had been so quiet and distant at first, seemingly tip-toeing around the other members of the herd, unsure and uncertain. He himself had been too shy to approach her and introduce himself when Lona was new. Fai had decided he would get to know her by watching her from a distance at first. He saw how she was gentle with the wild animals that scampered in the woods of the herdlands. He had watched her heal and return injured animals to their nests. He had watched her venture into the wooded areas that he was too afraid to go in to himself. She spoke softly to the young ones that were new to the herd; she carried herself with a quiet grace and serenity that he hadn't see in others. For a long time, he had amired her from afar, too anxious and nervous to ever dare approach her, and then she had done it for him. She had said hello, introduced herself, and found common ground with him through his studies of the world around him. If there had been any other to make him chatter away, he was sure Lona would have found it.

He hadn't even noticed how far out Lona had lead them. Fai had been too lost in his own thoughts. The stallion never dared to leave the main area of the herd, asking others to gather the plants and samples he needed while the gatherers were out and doing their business. Lona had even brought him a few plants for him to study. Perhaps he'd be able to find more samples that he could bring back while the pair was out walking together.

Fai turned his attention away from his own thoughts and back to the cream colored mare beside him. He supposed Lona was correct in going out and getting to know the area since she wasn't originally from the herd, though he had never ventured outside of the territory either, and he had grown up in the Kateri. "Ahh... Th-that's true. I n-never thought of it like that. B-but what if the new thing you see is something you don't like? Wh-what if it's scary?"

"Well I won't know if I don't like it until I try it! Sometimes it takes several exposures to new things in order to come to a decision on something." Lona hummed as she pondered Fai's question. He was such a timid and shy boy, and while she believed it to be an endearing quality at times, she couldn't help but wonder how Fai had managed to get through so much of his life in terror of practically everything unfamiliar to him, especially as a creature of study. He was always so excited to learn about new plants and animals but it seemed that was only when they were brought to him or found in the very safe inner area of the herd's territory. Lona couldn't help but wonder how Fai had come to be so scared of everything. Perhaps one day she would learn the origins of the stallion's fears.

"Fai, what do you hope on learning from those plants in your garden? I know you're studying them, but what is it that you're looking for exactly."

Fai perked up as Lona asked him question about is garden. If there was one thing he loved, it was sharing his insights on his studies. His father had always encouraged him to pursue his own path, to find a way of life that excited him and allowed him the chance to experience the things most important to him. Honestly he should have anticipated Lona asking about his garden, she always asked about the things he was interested in.

"Ah... W-well it's mostly for plant properties. I want to see determine the different natural properties of the plants that I'm growing. I know Qiyam has already done something similar, b-but... I don't think he'd want me meddling with his work any, so it's just better if I make one of my own." The stallion looked away sheepishly, ears flicking back in reaction to his anxious nerves. Bringing up Qiyam alwasy made anxiety lair within him. The white unicorn was always so intimidating and hard to approach...

"Anyways, I'm really hoping to be able to gather a lot of data and information through study of different plants. Perhaps I'll even be able to create potent healing potions out of them once I know enough about them."

Lona couldn't help but chuckle lightly as Fai brought up Qiyam. It was true that the elder stallion was incredibly difficult to approach; Lona had had a similarly difficult time approaching and learning from him, but she was glad she had taken the chance to learn from him. It had helped her figure out what she wanted her place within the herd to be and she had gained a lot of knowledge and insight thanks to Qiyam. Still, seeing as how scared Fai could be of most anything, Lona understood why Fao was so tentative when it came to even mentioning the white unicorn. Perhaps one day, the pink and green stallion would be able to overcome the anxiety that overwhelmed him.

"Well I'm sure you'll learn a lot and you'll have plenty of success with what you're trying to accomplish." Lona ducked her head to carefully avoid a particularly low hanging tree branch. "You're incredibly determined and passionate when it comes to such things as studying, and that sort of eagerness is always rewarded..." The mare trailed off once she noticed that Fai was being even more quiet than particular... She carefully glanced from side to side to see where the stallion went, head tilted out of curiosity. "Fai..?"

Fai had managed to wander off from Lona, somehow, and hadn't even noticed. He had discovered a plant tat was not yet a part of his study garden and he couldn't fight the urge to collect growths off of it's healthy stem in order to cultivate and grow another plant in the garden through trial and tribulation. He worked carefully to ensure he didn't damage the small bits he intended on harvesting and carefully tucked them away in a small pouch he carried on him for just such an occasion. It didn't occur to him that he and Lona had been separated till he lifted his white maned head and looked around for the cream colored mare only to find that she was nowhere nearby.

The stallion's brow creased in worry as thoughts of the worst flooded through him. Had he been so caught up in his scholarly work that some stealthy, silent predator had managed to attack Lona once they had enough distance between them? Had the creature been so efficient in killing that it had done so without Lona making any sort of death cry? Oh no, oh no, oh no... How could this have happened?!

With adrenaline coursing through him, the timid stallion pranced anxiously from hoof to hoof, craning his neck and turning around in circles as he tried to find some sort of clue as to where Lona had gone. What had he done to get himself in this situation? "L-Lona?"

"Fai? Fai!" Lona turned her head, calling out in to the woods to try and locate her travelling companion. They were well outside of the herds boundaries, something Lona had intended to key Fai in to once they were a comfortable enough distance away. She had thought it a good idea to try and get Fai comfortable with going further and further away from home, bit by bit. The mare hoped one day Fai would be willing to go out in to the world on his own, one day he would be willing to venture out beyond the comfort and home. She had never intended for them to get separated in such a manner. Now she feared that Fai would never wish to return to the outside.

Lona tried to retrace her steps and hopefully find her way back to where ever Fai had ended up since their separation.

Panic and fear was beginning to consume his anxious mind. How had he been so careless? The frail stallion shifted his weight from hoof to hoof as he tossed his head from side to side, looking about the woods with wild eyes. "L-Lona?"

He didn't know what to do. He had been so foolish, thinking he could go out with Lona. He should have stayed home, he should have stayed where it was safe. If he had stayed there, then this never would have happened. The stallion let out an anxious sigh, sweat beading on his brow. What if Lona never found him?

If Fai hadn't gone out exploring with Lona... Well... He wouldn't have been able to talk with her, he wouldn't have been able to find a plant to add to his garden. Going out was scary, terrifying even, but it really hadn't been so terrible, not with Lona by his side.

Lona took carefully steps as she walked through the woods. She couldn't help but feel terribly guilty for what had come to pass. She had pushed him too far, taking Fai far beyond the reaches of his comfort zone and brought him out in to somewhere he would usually never dare to venture. Lona could already imagine the panicked and worried state Fai had worked himself in to by now. The mare could only hope he was staying in one spot while she tried to find her way back to him. If he tried to find her, there was no telling where the two would end up and how far apart they would manage to get from each other. As much as she adored Fai's father, Fracas, she didn't intend on delivering news that she had managed to lose the pink stallion while going on a walk.

What would Tocapo say if she came back to the herd down a companion? The thought was embarrassing enough to bring color to her cheeks.

I don't think I'd be able to even have Tocapo look at me if I had to go back to the herd and ask for help... Hopefully it won't come to that, but Fai's safety is more important than me feeling embarrassed.

Every now and again Lona turned her head from side to side, calling out Fai's name in hopes that he would hear her and respond.

"We can't be that far away from each other... I hope."

Fai stood where he was, deciding it would be best if he didn't move from where he was. Lona was brave, Lona was probably looking for him. She wouldn't leave him behind she was too kind, too caring, and she was his friend. He was absolutely positive that Lona had gone searching for him. The mare would have noticed the lack of his presence.

Even so... The slightest sound was making him jump. He had heard a branch fall from a tree earlier and he had nearly jumped out of his skin as the branches clattering descent from the treetop rung out through the air. It had taken every fiber within his being not to up and run away. He had to stay strong and Fai knew if he tried to run away he wouldn't have the faintest idea of where he was or where the herd's territory was.

Lona continued her search for Fai, her worry continuing to mount and mount as her search continued to be fruitless. He really couldn't have gotten that far away from her, but the more time they were separated from each other, the more likely it was that the distance between them would keep growing. The dainty mare did her best to keep from despairing and did her best to continue the search.

His father is going to kill me if I don't find him... Lona sighed as she continued her slow pace through the ever thickening woods. There had to be some way for her to get Fai to see her. If she had some flint and stone she could have started a fire and created some sort of smoke signal. Though... even if that was possible, there was no way Fai would see the smoke unless he had managed to end up above the treeline. What a terrible pickle they had managed to end up in. Maybe if she had brought Keoki along with them this could have been avoided.

After spending more than enough time trembling and shaking, worried, nervous, and afraid, Fai decided that he would do his part to try and seek Lona out. No good would come of him just standing there, aimless. So with timidness shaking his form, Fai took his first solo steps into unfamiliar territory. He hoped he would be able to find Lona. If he went slow and careful, there was a chance that he and Lona would eventually cross paths again.

The stallion ventured on, pausing every few odd feet to look around the area. The light in the woods was getting brighter, meaning the trees were thinning. It was worrisome. He remembered the leaves creating a barrier from the sun and the spot he and Lona were in had been particularly well shaded. His grimaced in worry as he went on, walking forwards. His worry only grew at the mountains came in to view.

The mountains were the edge of the herd's territory and he had heard how there were Kalona out there, Kalona that were more than willing to attack and tear them limb from limb.

"I really hope Fai doesn't decide not to come on these walks with me anymore. I do enjoy his company." Lona ducked her head past a low hanging branch, doing her best to avoid getting slapped in the face by the leafy foliage. She had eventually decided to work her way back towards their herd, rather than heading further out to the mountains. Hopefully Fai had done the same. He probably knew better than to hang near the mountains. The kalona were eager to attack and harm the herd members, but the area within the mountains protected them, and going past them was too dangerous. Tocapo never let her venture much further than her usual distance without him when she did get antsy and wanted a change of scenery.

Maybe she could get Keoki and have him help her with her search. It wasn't unusual for her and her pronghorn familiar to go out and explore the woods together and gather materials and resources for the herd. Plus, Lona and Keoki knew the forest incredibly well, and they'd be able to split up to look for Fai and reconvene at a spot they both knew. Hopefully with Keoki's help, things would turn out for the best and she and Fai could return to their home, together.

Fai couldn't help but tremble at the sight of the mountains. Not that the mountains were terrifying to him because they were mountains, but because of what lurked beyond their peaks. His father had warned him many a time as a foal to stay out of the forest unless accompanied by him, his mother, or his sisters -- There was safety in numbers, after all -- and to never go towards the mountains. Fai stared up at the tree covered mountains, swallowing thickly. This was the worst spot he could be. Had he really managed to get that turned around in his panic? So much so that he headed even further away from his home and out towards the dangerous border that their herd's warriors had to patrol on the regular.

The stallion gave a quick shake of his head, trying to placate his nerves and hush his anxiety. Fai quickly turned himself, at least knowing that if he headed north to some degree that his home would be waiting for him. He just hoped Lona would find him and they could return together. He had been alone for so long at this point that even the sounds of the forest critters was starting to make his anxiety build and build. Fai didn't care for it. He just wanted to be back in front of his garden, studying his plants and learning what uses each one had, medicinal and otherwise.
