Kintsugi was starting to have her doubts to the wisdom of her askance for help. She'd met a confident, talented babben at school and one thing lead to another, and now she found herself arriving at Iron Chef's place for a cooking lesson. Given that her last excursion in food related activities had ended in a complete and utter mess, she wasn't feeling particularly confident, but perhaps a little hopeful.

Just...just a little.

"Hi, Iron Chef!" she greeted the fellow babben as she was let in, beaming to chase away any obvious signs that she was nervous. "I brought some sugar. I don't -- I don't know what we're making, but, don't people -- ask for cups of sugar?" Finishing the statement a little lamely, she offered up the sizable bag of the stuff as a gift. "Um -- I mean, thank you. For agreeing to help me today!"

When the knock at the door came, Iron Chef swung it open and opened her mouth to welcome Kintsugi...until the bag of sugar threw her off. She closed her mouth and blinked at the bag in surprise, then took it in her hooves.

"Oh!" she exclaimed. "Well. Thank you for this. I assure you it will be used." With her horn magic, she floated the sugar away into the pantry, then motioned for the other filly to come deeper into the home.

"I have our workspaces ready," she said. "Tell me... what seems to be your greatest cooking weakness that we can address?"

She watched the other filly act with ease and decisiveness, immediately feeling a sort of quiet awe. Kintsugi herself had more of a plodding pace, but she was working on it -- and seeing Iron Chef's solid direction was inspiring. Now, she had to pick out...one flaw to address. Just one?

"Mm," she put serious thought into it as she followed after the paler filly, "my father always said to not follow the recipe, to put my own spin on things. But I -- I really have a bad eye for judging sizes and...probably not the best palette for taste." She smiled, a little shy. "Maybe...some tips? What to look for, how to...balance?"

DELAY YOU SAY...

"Interesting," Iron Chef said, although the decided, flat tone of her voice seemed to imply it was anything but. She led Kintsugi to her own workspace and nodded a few times, like she was choosing exactly what to say, like squeezing fruit at the market. "When you're a novice, the best thing to do is follow the recipe. After you understand the recipe, you can add any of your spins you like. You have to know the rules before you break them."

Although there was a bluntness to her, Iron Chef looked at Kintsugi with a sort of quiet calm that showed no judgment or harshness--it seemed her directness was just her way. Having said as much, Iron Chef pulled out a recipe book and began flipping easily through the much-stained pages. "That's how I'd start, at least. Let's see. Do you want to make something sweet or savory?"

That was more or less what Kintsugi was used to -- that sort of flippant disinterest, even if it wasn't Iron Chef's intent. She seemed to struggle in the normal, everyday methods of life, and it was why she was trying so hard to learn. Apparently, exposing her finer points hadn't been the best call, but the blue filly wasn't so great on the social end of things, either, a gift her father insists (sadly, at that) was from him.

"Happy accidents, sometimes, can happen," she murmured quietly, head held slightly lower. She blinked once, then twice. What, she didn't know what she was doing, and the other actually wanted her to make a decision? Gracious! Drawing in a short breath, she flipped a mental coin and settled. "Sweet." That was the popular thing to do, it seemed. Might as well start there!

Iron Chef noted the quiet demeanor from the other filly and inwardly chastised herself: she was trying to learn after all, like she had once in her father's kitchen. And Midnight Snack had been more than patient with her, hadn't he? She tried to soften her expression and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, happy accidents--that's the best part of cooking or baking, isn't it?"

She flipped to one of her favorite recipes, a chocolate caramel sea-salt pie. Iron added an encouraging note to her voice as she offered it to Kintsugi. "Do you think you'd want to make this? You could take it home to your family after if you want."

Kintsugi glanced over to the other with a small, uncertain smile. "You'd know better than me," she admitted with a small thread of humor in her voice. "So hopefully you can help me, being a hard case and all..." She was more adept and fixing a hopeless situation than following rules to complete something...that, and creating hopeless situations with food!

She peered carefully at the indicated recipe, and if possible, she paled a little. "Oh, I...do you think we could do it?" She could see at least twenty steps, which meant there were at least thirty things she could mess up. Another glance was spared to find where there might be rags and paper towels, because she was pretty sure they'd be needed. "I'm not sure my family would want to eat it, might not be safe for our consumption." A faint giggle escaped her, trying to defuse her nerves.

I DIDN'T GET THE QUOTE I'M SORRY also I entirely forgot what element this was for Kintsugi...go me

"Don't you worry. Baking--it's just science. Measure well and you'll always be fine," said Iron Chef with a sort of matter-of-fact comfort in her voice. She set the book up on the cooking station, marveling at how low her companion's confidence seemed to be.

She never felt that, herself. Even as a total novice, she'd been brimming with confidence, a sort of knowledge that she'd be good at the family business--better than good. She'd had so little patience with failure, so little goodwill toward her own mistakes. She'd always shoved them aside and marched forward with this, cooking and baking.

But Kintsugi didn't have that, and while, on some level, that baffled Iron Chef, she also felt her heart twist to the filly.

"And--" she heard herself saying suddenly. "I won't let you make something bad, I promise. I'll stick with you this whole journey, ok? Your family will get a great pie at the end of this, and you and I--we'll have made it together."

Omg... I forgot, too. It wasn't loyalty for both of them?

"I wish I had your confidence," the filly said out loud with a soft sigh. Usually, she would have been mortified to say her thoughts like that so plainly, especially in admiration of another, but Kintsugi felt like honesty was the best policy here. More than cooking, she wish she could be taught how to straighten her withers and let the rest slide off her back. But...at least with cooking, she'd be useful.

A small, tinkling laugh escaped her. "It's okay, Iron Chef! I'm -- I'm not going to get better in one day, but I'm trying to take those steps." She cast a smile that was in part reassuring and partially apologetic. "It'd just be nice to get through it without klutzing it up." She dipped her head towards the book, and then to the other filly. "I'll -- I'll follow your lead. B-but don't let me handle flour and stuff over the bowl, I will spill more..."

Nope, I had Loyalty with Shockstar before this one ;v; It's no biggie, she doesn't need an element out of it, I just...forgot lol

"Nobody gets better in one day," said Iron Chef with a smile, setting the cookbook down onto a holder and placing a see-through plastic holder atop it to keep the pages from further staining. She began to take out the ingredients, meticulously arranging them in order of when she would need them. "And I used to make the flour go everywhere, too… I've got a trick for that."

She grinned and began to measure out ingredients, explaining method, showing how to level a cup over the flour bin before moving it, to keep any messy shudderings in an enclosed area. She explained the differences in fats and what they did to a pie crust--or to a cookie--and why they used butter today. Everything was methodical and slow and well-explained, and before long, almost like magic, everything began to come together into a pie.

Iron explained why she cleaned as she went, keeping the kitchen from looking like a bomb of dishes went off in it, even though they DID go through many dishes--cleaning as part of baking or cooking made the end product more enjoyable and left little to do after.

"Are you following ok?" She asked the other filly, smiling.

Kintsugi laughed, slightly abashed. "'cept you, I imagine -- and your family." Her mirth faded into shock when Iron Chef said that even she used to make flour go everywhere, disbelief and perhaps a small inkling of hope - for herself, of course - leaning in close as the lesson began in earnest.

The soft pink filly opened up her world of knowledge and Kintsugi drank it in, eyes wide, mouth practically ajar through the entire thing. The most she could do was share a short laugh of appreciation and wonder or gape at the simplicity of the tips and tricks, but she followed along sharply and with mostly mirrored motions. She'd still waver and narrowly avoided knocking over the entire bag of flour after the fact (thank goodness, she'd have died of shame on the spot), but she kept her legs in and relied on her magic and Iron Chef's lead. With the amazing teaching capabilities of the baking filly, the patience and perseverance, the pie began to take shape. Kintsugi was delighted.

"Yes! You make it seem so -- so easy! I don't know if I'll remember any of it on my own - um, out of enthusiasm, not lack of attention, I promise! - but I'll remember this." She cast a smile to the other, the expression between soft and almost embarrassed. Apparently, being honest with Iron Chef - and honest with herself - was yielding the best results possible, an outcome she hadn't even anticipated. Maybe pleasing everyone else wasn't the right path, after all.

"Will you teach, when you're older?" she asked abruptly, eyes full of thoughts and emotions she could not easily express. "You sticking it out with me - just in this one day, you've done so much for me. I can't imagine the amazing things you could do if you had more time..."

Hopefully this RP will give her a little more of a backbone -sobs- tyty, I love all your characters so much -utterly adores Iron Chef-

Iron Chef couldn't help but laugh at Kintsugi's honesty on that one--she may not be able to remember every step of the pie-making, but wasn't that ok? It was just a first lesson, after all.

"You don't have to remember everything, just some of the tips and tricks. Luckily, recipes will fill in the rest for you with mostly everything else,," said the filly with a smile. She used her magic to float the finished pie crust off of its cooling rack and pour the finale--a grand and delectable, soft as air chocolate mousse filling atop it. "See how gorgeous that looks? And you had 50% of that! Believe it or not. Don't you think your family will be happy to eat it?"

At Kintsugi's next question though, Iron hesitated. "I… you know, I'm not sure! I always thought it would be fun to have a sous chef, someone I could have with me in the kitchen but teach and help out and help reach their next level… maybe I will do that. I--you know, I wasn't sure, really, but I really enjoyed this. It's--really, you're--a lot of fun, you know."

"I don't know if they'll be happy -- maybe scared." She was not the best when it came to cooking, even less when it came to sweets. Of course, her dad would eat the whole thing to make her happy, but she could spin it so they'd know it was safe. No undercooked dough or rock hard fillings here!

Iron Chef's words garnered a look of surprise from Kintsugi, soft sunny eyes wide. "Fun?" She echoed the word as if it was foreign, but eventually started to laugh, a not unkind sound. "Thank you, for taking the time. I mean it. To try and help and show me how it's done, to share your own thoughts for the future..." The Phony, though a babben, looked a little older and a touch wistful. "You've taught me a lot in these hours, Iron Chef. Thank you."

She bowed her head in gratitude, perking up afterwards to dispel any seriousness or weight that may have come with her words. "And now to clean while it bakes!" She'd take those few precious minutes with her new friend, open-heartedly.
