Elsie felt a bit more sober about this class, given the fact that this lesson centered on the cheering charm, and the potential for misuse with that particular charm was quite high, compared to some other seemingly-innocent spells. It wasn't that she suspected any sinister motives among her students, but she did want them to take this seriously. However, she admitted to herself, the dummy with a frowning face drawn on it in the front of the classroom was probably going to make it a little hard.

After the students had taken their seats, she quickly took attendance, and then stepped over to the board, where Exhilaro was written in elegant cursive. "Good afternoon, class. Today we will be learning and attempting the Cheering Charm, otherwise known as Exhilaro." She turned to the blackboard, writing down the definition of the charm in chalk. "The cheering charm has one purpose and one purpose only; to make the charmed individual happy. It was invented by a wizard by the name of Felix Summerbee in the 1400s, who many assume to have been a court jester of some sort."

The blonde professor turned back to the students, blue eyes narrowed slightly. She wanted to be absolutely straight forward with them all; they weren't first or second years to be coddled anymore."However, when misused or overdone, it is known to induce fits of hysterical laughter, and prolonged hysteria, as I'm sure you all can surmise, is not in any way beneficial or healthy for the human mind and body, as amusing as it may seem at first. This charm should only be used in situations in which it is deemed absolutely necessary. To help the grieving, for example, or to calm extreme anxiety, as it leaves one feeling very calm and content. It is not a replacement for mind healing. A charm is not a substitute for say, muggle medication. The effects of this charm wear off over time, and the more one is exposed to it, the more resistant to its effects one becomes. I want the word of everyone in this class that they will never perform this charm on someone else unless it is called for, and never without the permission of the person it's to be cast on. I hope I've made myself clear."

Elsie waited to see some nods and assents, before lightening a little and nodding to the dummy beside her. "This is Frank. It's up to you to turn his mood around. One by one, please- don't worry about wand movement, simply point, and repeat after me, ex-ILL-ar-oh."

Elsie was busy arranging a series of common household items on a series of borrowed music stands from the Music Room when the third years entered the room. As they were seating themselves she hurriedly took attendance and summoned the homework with a wave of her wand. Carpe retractum, she had to admit, was not the most intriguing charm to study, given its similarity to accio, but it was important.

The blonde witch turned to the board, writing out CARPE RETRACTUM - SEIZE AND PULL CHARM, as she began to lecture. "Notes out everyone; today we're going to go over the seize and pull charm, which creates what is essentially a magic rope with which to grab objects out of reach, particularly ones it might be risky to use a summoning charm on. It's rumored to have been created by a family of height-challenged shopkeepers, to help them stock goods. This charm can also pull the caster towards the object. This spell does take strength into account- the brawnier among us will have a far easier time pulling heavy objects towards themselves. This is why it is crucial to lean back slightly when casting the spell, so your body weight can help you pull."

"The light from this spell when performed correctly ought to be goldish or orange, and in some cases more purple tinged. There is no exact wand movement, but the wand should be moved as if cracking a whip. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum- in other words, 'seize the remote object'." Elsie gestured to the items set up. "I'd like you all to move your desks aside and practice on these, moving back a foot or two after every successful cast. Go slowly- I don't want anyone losing control of the charm and whacking someone in the face." She stepped aside to let them get to it.

Elsie could hardly believe it was already Thursday; the week seemed to have flown by. And seeing as it was her last class of the day, she was a bit more relaxed than she might otherwise be. She glanced back at the massive chalkboard behind her; in one corner the class rules were neatly outlined; in another the homework assignment, in yet another the supply list, and in the final corner, a doodle that looked like it had been scrawled by a student and smudged over. When students began to make their way into the room, some more lively than others, she stood up to face the class.

"Good afternoon everyone," the blonde woman said cheerfully. "Welcome back to another year at Hogwarts; I imagine you're all much busier this year than you've ever been before, with all the electives to choose from. If you thought a charm you learned last year was particularly useful, do let me know- if you hated all of them and are now permanently holding a grudge against this subject.... well, I'll see if I can change your mind this year." Elsie grinned, then turned to her list of students, determined to keep track of who was who.

Sonora slipped into Charms early, intent on taking advantage of the empty classroom to just relax, maybe talk to someone. Yesterday had been insane. She'd slept entirely through Astronomy--which wasn't exactly anything new, but usually she managed to stay awake long enough to greet the professor. Not only that, but she'd woken up late and barely slipped through before Professor Hill locked the doors in Herbology. She'd finally gotten over being afraid of the greenhouses last year and was actually looking forward to the class too!

Well in any case, Thursday was one of her light days and Charms was one of her favorite classes. When Professor Shoichet started class, she spoke up cheerfully: "Scourgify was immensely useful! I wish we could use magic outside of Hogwarts though. It would have been really useful for doing the dishes or polishing potions equipment." She had been tempted to do so anyways over in the summer and gone as far as taking out her wand and sit with the end hovering over the dishes. But her rule-abiding cousin had put a quick stop to that and lectured her for a full hour on how underaged magic was not allowed, especially for a non-emergency task such as dirty dishes. She argued that "Scourgify would make this a lot faster and a lot more fun and Mum is here to supervise anyways," but resigned herself to washing the dishes by hand for another 4 years.

Vespera went into charms, glad it wasn't the first thing in the morning anymore, instead it was the end of the day. After this she could eat dinner and do homework, and all would be well, isntead of having to struggle throgh an entire day of classes still. "I enjoyed arresto momentum. i'm sorry for abusing the charm... but I used it on Jonah so I could catch up to him..." She grinned at Jonah, he enjoyed this spell quite a bit. It made it easier to make Jonah with his long legs slow down so she could catch up with him. Now, it was very difficult (or at least a counter charm difficulty) for him to run away from a prank she was planning for him. Although, he could use the same charm on her... and forever get away. She pulled out her notebook and wrote down class notes for the day.

Vespera walked into class and began writing notes, a spell to make someone happy. She needed that for DADA, maybe she could enjoy it then. She frowned when the professor noted about the charm effects wearing off and being less effective. Guess it wasn't that effective to cast on herself for class then. She walked up to Frank the Dummy and pointed her wand at him, "Exillaroh!" She tried smiling through the spell, hoping that it would make it more effective. She shrugged, she guessed the spell worked? It was hard to test that with a dummy. She would keep practicing it. and maybe one day figure out if she was actually doing it correctly, but for now. notes.

Rhydian surprised himself; he was early to class, and actually had everything he needed: his wand, his bag, all his notes and even his textbook. All of which he dropped unceremoniously on his desk when he plopped down into a seat to wait the day's lesson. On the board read one word: Exhilaro. That perked Rhydian right up. He knew exactly what he was going to do with that spell! Gwyneth would be his test dummy in and out of class with the spell (she sure needed it.) But then the professor got a dark look on her face, very serious. It was a look he had never seen on his parents before and made him think twice on her words. How could something so simple be so dangerous? He didn't understand. His face twisted as if he'd been stupefied.

Vespera was the first to volunteer. Rhydian decided the best way to shake the ill thoughts would be to throw himself into the lesson. He stood at the front, practiced the wand motions for good measure and said, "Ex-ILL-ar-oh!" He spun his wand forward a wave of energy struck Frank spinning that frown upside down. Then he moved away to let the rest of the class shuffle in turns.

He sat next to the only other person who had finished the test: Vespera. She was scrawling something down: probably just notes. But Rhydian wondered if it was a note especially for someone. ”Hey.” he said hoping to cure his boredom. ”So what do you think of this spell? Don't think I've ever seen Professor Shoichet this serious before...”

Aldrick sighed as he went into Charms, he had only had herbology this morning, and now with Charms. It was only the third year here, how could school drag by so quickly. Sure he was a bit busier this year than last, but at least the work gave him something to occupy his time with. Although, his sister kept him plenty busy, since he wouldn't tell her anything about the kitchens, she had taken to owling him from her tower, to the Gryfindor tower, it was rather annoying, but also nice to know that he had family so close.

August had spent much of his afternoon trying to refamiliarize himself with the plants in Herbology and then spent the rest of the day reviewing other subjects in the library. He had managed to skim through his entire mythology text for tonight, so that was good.

As Professor Shoichet started class, August made use of other people's thoughts to review spell uses. He could hardly imagine anyone hating Charms--it was the poster child subject for magic after all! And if anyone disliked Professor Shoichet they were just wrong.

"Scrougify was really useful," he agreed with another student who brought it up. "I liked having a multipurpose cleaner at wandtip." He understood though, the temptation of using it outside of Hogwarts now: Every time there was something unclean over the summer, he had been tempted to grab his wand and scourgify it.
