[B] Shinging Bright (The Moon is Gleaming X Last Night)

She could hardly believe it. Her days of being alone were almost over. Nuzzling her stomach, she wondered if they would look like their father more. Only time would tell for that.

The Moon is Gleaming knew the legends of old were true. The family told the tale for each generation, no matter when or which generation it happened to be. She kept walking, thinking of the legendaries that her father and his father told about meeting. Each one different, which meant she would probably be meeting a different one too. Glancing at the small gift she brought with her, she hoped it might be useful.

Last Night did not often respond to these nudges, the knowing, for her the knowing was interesting in and of itself and she felt little desire either way to meet or not meet its source. It was enough for her, enough to know and know completely in this one way, that she could walk away--for her a new thing that came with this new instinct.

Sometimes though, when she had no other secret paths and threads of interest drawing her along, she followed this instinct to it's source: expecting parents, especially those in need or those searching.

She followed this time, until she came upon the pale, speckled doe. Her antlers reached into the sky, dark like reaching claws, but her voice was low and calm, gentle, "Well met."

"Greetings." Gleaming tilted her head down, paying respect in the best way she knew how. The Mare that spoke to her, left her stunned at the sight of the cobweb between her antlers. "I brought you a gift." She felt like she was babbling, but maybe it was due to the children or the fact she was in the presence of one so beautiful. Lifting the piece of scale that came from another family member, though this one had sat in the weather for seasons. It had a bit of a gleam.

Last Night smiled, just slightly, her eyes, all of them, turned softly upon the doe. She tilted her head at the offering, antlers drawing a graceful arc across the sky. It was an interesting gift, fitting though the doe could not know it.

"A unique offering to be sure," she said, her voice going far away as she wondered at the kin the scale must have come from. "A story in many ways."

She almost asked if the doe might let her see it, the story, but she refrained. A blessing for a gift, the story later, perhaps. "And what can I do for you? What gift can I offer your children?"

Gleaming listened closely as her gift was looked upon. "It came from a piece that has been passed down." Shifting slightly, the expecting doe thought some of why she went looking for. Her father's father seemed really happy with his mate and only the one. "For me there is just the happiness of my children. For them, I want them to be able to achieve what they put their minds too. I know they may fail at times and possibly many times, but I don't want them to give up easily." Her eyes widen at how many words she just spoke. "I am sorry. That seems like a lot, now that I think of it."

"We hope for many things and if we do not ask for them, if we do not seek them out, they will never come." Last Night responded, soothing and calm. She minded not that kin cared; there was a time when she thought that not caring was a form of truth, but it was delusion. "You need not worry about wanting for your children. Better to ask too much than not at all."

She then went quiet, considering her next words. Finally, "May your children understand that happiness is not the absence of pain or sadness nor the product of luck only."

And so it was done.
