"Demona texted you!" Octavia informed her step-brother as they waited in line to receive their drinks. She was still playing with Kai's phone. "It looks like she's not mad."
Kai sighed. Although Octi had managed to cheer him up a little bit in the van on their way here, he was slipping down into the dumps again. Octi furrowed her fishy brow and checked Kai's phone again.
"Nero texted you! He says that shirts are optional...?" That one confused Octavia. She looked at Kai, who shrugged. Kai didn't subscribe to Instagrim, and he only had Grimterest on his phone to look at fangart. He had no idea about the bro-iest of bro-memes that was currently blowing up the grimternet.
"Maybe he's playing casketball and it's shirts vs skins or something." Kai replied, still pretty sigh-filled.
"Hey! Sir sighs-a-lot! Your drinks are up!" One of the furrista's slid a couple of steaming hot drinks at the two step-siblings. Octavia picked them up. She'd ordered for both of them, the most cheering-up-ing-est drinks she could think of. Double Scaramel Chai Latte Chocolate mocha Freakaccinos with whipped scream, sprinkles, scaramel and chocolate syrup, and a cherry on top. It was less coffee and more like a dessert.
The two sat down. Kai basically melted into his chair, all slumped over. Octi was starting to get annoyed.
"Hey!" She chirped at him. "Stop being so down in the dumps! Don't you remember the song that Atomica and the Rest In Peace sang? The message was that you can't give up! 'Don't stop screamin'!'"
In half a day, Octavia had become Atomica and the R.I.P's biggest fanggirl. She flipped through the pictures on Kai's iCoffin till she got to the selfie she'd taken with Marceline. It was the beast picture ever.
"You have to believe that you and Demona will work things out! And that everything is going to be all fright!" She informed Kai. He poked at the whipped topping on his drink.
"It's not that." He finally said, straightening up. "It's that...I lost my temper."
"So?" Octavia asked. "Damon was being an elitist jerk. That one sparkleghoul slapped him!"
Octavia flipped through the pictures on the phone again. She'd managed to take a picture of the moment of the slap. Damon's lips were practically three inches off his face.
"Yeah, but, what did that accomplish? I got mad and railed off on him, and nothing I said is going to change his mind. He's just going to see that I got mad and that's going to confirm his prejudices to him. I just...I wish I'd have thought of a better way to show him WHY he's wrong instead of just getting all flustered."

Well, even if Kai was only going to poke at his drink, Octavia wasn't going to let hers get cold. She dove right in, and it was uhh-mazing! Land drinks were the beast. You could drink them without having to have everything in a pouch with a straw, like you did underwater. There were no Coffin Bean franchisees in the Bermuda Die-angle.
"Kai, some monsters you just can't reason with." Octi told her steppie. "Like these jerky Mermaids I know. They think that Mermaids are just the beast at EEEVERYthing, but they're just dirty underfinned cheaters and bullies."
Now Kai was frowning. He'd tried to convince her that she was wrong about mermaids, but he just had no underwater experience. Even though Kai hoped for the beast in anymonster, no mermaid Octavia had ever met was anything but a Mean Ghoul. Her school, the all-Kraken Blackwater Academy, had a huge rivalry with High Seas High, the Mermaid school across the tide pool. And every Kraken knew that Mermaids were dirty, rotten cheaters.
"Octi, if you only got to KNOW a mermaid, maybe you wouldn't-" Kai suddenly cut himself off, as if an idea had struck him. He stood up. "That's it!"
"Uh...what's it?" Octavia asked.
"It's like I said to Damon at the Maul, Octavia. He's never gotten to know me or my family. How can you fight prejudice unless you're willing to show why it's wrong, right?"
"Right?" Octavia agreed, not sure where Kai was going.
"I'm going to invite Damon over for dinner."
"WHAT?" Octavia suddenly saw where Kai was going. And it felt like it was a bad direction.
"Yeah! I'll invite him and Demona over for dinner, so he can actually meet dad and Abyssa - and you, properly. Then he can sit and talk with us...and eat...and see exactly how we live our lives. Get him out of that demon safe zone he's locked himself into and let him see how the rest of the world lives."
"I don't know...." Octavia felt uncertain about this plan. "He said such awful things. Maybe he won't change his mind."
"Well he definitely won't unless somemonster makes the effort to try." Kai replied, clearly looking cheered up. "I think deep inside he may be a good monster."
"He's a greed demon, isn't he? Won't he eat us out of house and home?" Octavia asked.
"Not if he's as high-society and well-bred as he claims to be." Kai answered. "Besides, tell me your mom's South Seas Stew isn't worthy of kings and queens."
"It is uhhh-mazing..." Octi agreed. Kai took his phone back from Octavia and started typing.
"I'll clear it with dad and Abyssa, and if they're okay, I'll invite Damon and Demona over. Do you think having dinner before the Howliday Ball is a good idea?"
"I guess so?" Octavia replied, but Kai didn't listen.
"And I'll invite Melody and her date too, how does that sound?!" Kai slyly asked Octavia. Melody was his cousin, which meant she was Octi's step-cousin. Octavia had no idea about Melody's fishy side, though. Maybe this night would be a chance to kill two prejudices with one stone...
"Okay!" Octi agreed happily. That would make this dinner MUCH more bearable...even if Octavia herself didn't have a date for the dance.

"Thanks, dad!" Kai finished talking to his dad and stepmom on the iCoffin. He was smiling now, his plan starting to be formulated. He set the phone down and grinned at Octavia.
"Success?" She asked him as she polished off her monster latte. He nodded.
"We have to promise to help clean up the house and give them a claw in preparing the meal, but otherwise they were all for it!"
"That could be fun..." Octi ventured. "I took Home Ickonomics this scaremester. I could make cupquakes!"
"And I could decorate them!" Kai nodded. He'd taken Home Ick too, of course...but Damon had been there for the whole Scaremester as the Creature's assistant. He knew exactly how Kai operated in a kitchen. It would be beast if he and Octavia tag-teamed cooking. "All fright, I'm going to text everymonster then."
Octi looked a little down...because she didn't have a date for the ball. Kai wanted her to understand that she was going to have a great time and wouldn't be a third wheel at all...but she'd forget about a date once they started getting ready anyways.
He sent a text to Melody first.
Melody Nocturna To: Melody Hey, cousin! We're going to have a dinner w Demona, Damon, Octi and my parents before the Howliday Ball. If u have a date (or if u don't) u are invited too! Can u make it?
The next one to text was Demona.
Demona To: Demona I'm sorry I blew up earlier. I meant what I said but losing it in public isn't me. I want to make it up to u and Damon...dinner before the Howliday Ball at my place? Both u and Damon are invited.

"Melody and her date Shad are in." Kai informed Octavia. "And Demona is, too. She says Damon is in as long as he can bring Deanna."
"The baby?!" Octavia asked, hexcitedly. "One of the chapters in Home Ick this scaremester was caring for small fry! Of course, it wasn't a real baby, it was a sea cucumber wrapped in a diaper, but I did really well for that chapter!"
"Yeah, she's a pretty good baby, too. I mean, as far as demon babies go." Kai had a soft spot for Demona and Damon's youngest sibling. There had been a big fight in their family when she was born over what to name her...and, somehow, Kai's suggestion of Deanna had stuck. Each of the demons had a different attribute in them - Damon was Gluttony, Demona was Vanity, and Deanna was Sloth. She slept. A lot.
She'd probably sleep through the whole dinner, in fact.
"This dinner could be really fun." Octavia shivered a little bit, making her tentacles tremble. "Or it could be a total disaster."
"That's how most art projects go." Kai answered wisely, wiping down their table before they left. "So...want to go to the Roller Maze finals tonight?"
