Hearing the birds comfort him in Cecil's voice, Parker's lower lip trembled as tears came to his eyes. He didn't want to hear it, he didn't want to listen to the two of them fight. He couldn't stand it.
Feeling the remote come closer to his hand, he softly smiled, changing the channel to a cartoon movie about birds. "For us both," he said quietly.

Sawyer's hand slid off of the doorknob, falling to his side. "What the hell are you talking about? I don't want to leave you, Cecil. Why can't you be content with what we have?" He moved closer, pointing a finger at Cecil. "Why do you need such insane confirmation that I love you? Why do you need me to prove that I love you? What, are you afraid that the only way to keep me is to marry me? It certainly didn't work for my ex-wives!"

As the birds settled down and stared at the movie, Parker's phone buzzed with another message.
"Helo Parker! It is me Ayson! I am on my unklez fone! Hi!"

"Stop comparing this to your past!" Cecil yelled. "When you marry someone you're telling them that you're ready to settle down, that you've found the one. I know it didn't work out the past two times but I'm not them, Sawyer! I don't want to go into this ten years and keep being introduced as a boyfriend!"

"YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!"

Parker reached for his phone, reading the message with a smile. "Hey man! What're u up 2?" he texted back.

"You're my partner. I'll introduce you as that!" he responded. "I don't want to get married, Cecil. I'm not changing my mind because you throw a tantrum. If this isn't enough for you, if our commitment to each other right now isn't enough, then I'll just go."

One of the cockatoos leaned in and stared at Parker's phone curiously. "Dad!" she chirped.

Cecil opened his mouth to argue further, only to stop himself. There was no point. Sawyer was going to stay stubborn no matter what he said. "Forget it," he growled.

"YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!"

Parker chuckled, shaking his head before answering. "Ask him 4 a trip 2 the North Pole! Duh!" he texted, then looked up to the bird. "No, this is my friend, Aysun."

"Fine." Sawyer tossed the bag he'd been holding onto the bed, then stormed out. "Parker, get your coat, we're leaving."

"Dad!" the bird insisted then whistled.

Cecil hesitated when Sawyer started to leave, but didn't stop him. If he wanted to be childish and storm off then go right ahead!

"Then ask if I can come 2."
He set hsi phone down, looking up as his father barked at him. He nodded and stood, gently nudging the birds off and grabbing his coat. "What about Cecil?" he asked.
Sawyer sent him a glare, which shut him right up. He nodded, then walked over to Cecil's room and gently knocked on the door. "Merry Christmas, Cecil," he said, then lowered his voice. "I... I love you." He then hurried away, following his father as they left.

With a noise that was both a yell and a sigh, Cecil sat at the edge of his bed, his forearms on his knees and his head slumped forward. Why did he have to open his big mouth.
Hearing Parker's voice, Cecil looked up. His face was red and his eyes were glassy; he turned his head to change his expression quickly, sniffing and scratching his nose nonchalantly then looking back at the boy with a small smile. "Yeah, merry Christmas to you too," he mumbled, his mouth twitching when he heard Parker's next line. "I love you too," he sniffed when the boy was long gone.
Left alone, Cecil dropped his face into his hands, trying to hold back hot tears. Was this his fault? Should he be mad at Sawyer? He wished this never happened, but he knew it was unavoidable. And now he knew Sawyer had no intention to marry him. He could see the logic in it, he could, but... it just felt like he wasn't loved if even thoughts of marriage were refused to be considered.
Hearing scratches against the floor, he looked up again to see his birds at his doorway, each of them looking at him carefully.
"Hey," one said. She walked over to him and climbed up to his knee, looking up at him. "It's gonna be okay," she said gently. The other two were at his feet by then.
"I love you," one cockatoo said while waving his foot.
"Shh, you'll be fine," the last bird said.
Cecil wiped his eyes with a small laugh. He lowered his hand to let one bird on and lifted him up, gently scratching beneath his beak. "Thanks guys," he sniffled tearfully.
