On and off for the last few days I've been having a sparing match with some kid who's trying to take "philosophical" Taoism way too seriously. He even went so far as to call the Immortals in Taoism to have "bastardized" the teachings. Yet he's obviously in love with Lao-tzu.

How do feel about things like this, have you ever found yourself upset by the level of ignorance that Taoism is treated with?

I think it rather presumptuous to think that older teachings are the bastardizations. The Immortals serve a definite purpose, and are/were readily understandable examples of Taoist living. It's just foolish to rail against variations of a religion, it's like a Protestant ranting against Catholics for having Saints. It is disrespectful and a waste of time.
