The M.V. Ultima Project were a series of projects conducted by the first 12th division captain of the Gotei 13, Cicero Bruno, one of the Soul King's most valuable squadron captains, and personal friend to the royal guards. The M.V. Ultima Project was supposed to be a means to an end. A high influx of hollow plagued the world of the living and of the dead; with little resources and time, the Gotei depended on the M.V. Ultima Project to enhance the strength of their current ranks. The M.V.
Ultima Project were a series of experiments performed on willing shinigami who sacrificed their time to fight for their home. Initially, the experiments seemed just and reasonable, however it was all a facade to mask the twisted and evil desires of the 12th division captain.
It was the captain of the 4th division who discovered the impact of these experiments on these test subjects; countless men and women were either scarred emotionally, physically deformed, or dead. A few other shinigami have been documented as missing following the beginning of the experiments. The 4th division captain attempted to reason with Cicero, to stop him from harming anyone else. Unfortunately, he did not take too well to that, and killed the 4th division captain, sparking a war within the Gotei 13. The Soul King, heartbroken, sent out the remainder of the Gotei 13 to raid the squad 12 sector, and take down Cicero and his experiments.
Cicero was killed during the raid, and his lieutenant had escaped. Hidden within the depths of Cicero's work, the Gotei had come across his successful experiments The Visoreds.
