Iwa is a planet that was discovered in a solar system several lightyears from Earth. Iwa has breathable air, drinkable water, edible plants and animals, changing seasons, good gravity... Essentially, it's a sister planet to Earth. Also, it has no native sentient race. At the time of its discovery, this planet was perfect for colonization. Mankind had long since turned Earth into a barren rock encrusted with steel and machinery. Craving a new beginning, many humans left their home planet for a fresh start.

On two massive spaceships, the Dragon and the Phoenix, 10,000 people left Earth for a simpler way of life on Iwa. Animals, plants, medicines, tools, and other items considered to be of necessity were brought aboard the ships, but it was understood that, after colonization was complete, anything above a certain level of technological sophistication would be left in the cold vastness of space. After farms and villages were established, that's exactly what happened. The people of Iwa thrived. New generations were born. Life was simple, but enjoyable. To the colonists, it was paradise. For over one thousand years, that feeling of paradise went unchanged.

In the summer of the year 1251 AC (AC: After Colonization), the peace was broken. A sort of rift formed in the sky above Homestead Lake. A small army of winged and scaled monsters, which later came to be known as Dragonborn, descended upon the homes that surrounded the lake. Those that did not escape were brought back into the Rift as prisoners. The prisoners were exposed to the energy of the Soul Stone, which mutated the prisoners and changed the nature of their souls. The mutation was meant to dehumanize the prisoners and make them better slaves. Humans have always been resourceful, though, and they quickly rebelled. One human woman even managed to steal the Soul Stone, and when the humans traveled back to Iwa through the Rift, she took it with her and hid it in the caves of the Ashen Mountain Range. The creatures of the Rift were not willing to part with the Soul Stone, though. This conflict was the beginning of the first war of Iwa.

The war is usually isolated to the area surrounding Homestead Lake and everything between it and the Ashen Mountain Range to the south. The Rifters want the Soul Stone, and they are very single minded, so their activities are pretty predictable. Every once in a while, they will raid a village, but that's never for anything but supplies. Without the Soul Stone, capturing prisoners for slavery makes no sense to them. Rifters rarely fight in large numbers, either. First of all, there's not enough land in the Homestead Lake area for large scale attacks. Also, Rifters tend to be undisciplined and hostile toward each other. They don't like leadership. These qualities make them inadequate warfarers. Unfortunately, they're also tenacious and stubborn. So they don't fight well and are very unorganized, but they are persistent in their endeavors, so this war could be drawn out for a very long time.

The woman who stole the Soul Stone has come to be known as the Ghost. The Ghost and a few of her friends are the only ones guarding the Stone and the secret of its location. To say the least, they need help. Keeping the Soul Stone hidden controls its power and keeps the Rifters from creating servants and soldiers. Guarding it is necessary, but the Ghost and her handful of friends are not enough to adequately guard the object. That's where you come in. The Ghost doesn't care if you're a human skilled in combat, a strong Changling mutated by the Soul Stone, or a Rifter who sympathisizes with the people of Iwa. She just needs good fighters that she can trust.
