Furries! (awkwardly lacking any form of self preservation) 1,537 Lifestyle Discussion 9/17/14 7:56am

Yeah, that's what I love about the furry fandom. It's not just a fandom of something some other group made; WE are the creators, and we're fans of each other, just because we can. The sense of community I felt at my first con was unlike anything I've ever felt. I've heard of those. Sounds like furries with a focus on Twilight.

Christians are NOT murderers 39 Casual Discussion 8/25/14 8:42am

It's moreover the idea that a strong sense of faith inherently causes a person to be mentally blind, and thus easily swayed by what they perceive to be what they're faithful in. For example, there are a lot of people who would very much like to practice stoning of "sinners", but resist doing so because it's illegal and could get them in trouble. Faith is belief without evidence, and thus it is i ...

Fat men vs. fat women 40 Lifestyle Discussion 8/9/14 6:36pm

Although I'm quite fond of fuller and even overflowing figures, as a lesbian I still prefer women. Fat just looks better on them in my eyes. I suppose society treats fat men better though. The standards society has for anyone is to be fit, but it's almost as if they don't expect women to have standards for men. So these standards are disproportionately directed at women. Now sure, fat men do ...

Although we were more acquaintances than anything, we had some camaraderie in being part of a very small population of Gaians with intersexual conditions. We wanted to spread an understanding of fluid sex and gender to those who are unfamiliar with the subjects. Then one disagreement about whether or not it's racist to automatically assume white people are disrespecting other cultures if the ...

I'm kinda burned out on this subject, but this kinda reminds me of.... all of Japan. In the Great Taika, Japan essentially looked out at the rest of the world from its safe waterlocked borders, liked Chinese culture, and copied a s**t-ton of stuff while ignoring things they didn't like such as footbinding. I can see why they would leave out footbinding. And they took all of this and incorpo ...

This is also a good point. Perhaps the semantics about which way it's harmful are merely semantics, and the focus should indeed be education where it's necessary.

This is a fair point, although I would argue that we see the same concept played out in other groups. For example, there are quite a lot of loud, obnoxious women who have damaged the movement's image from within. Christianity has been pushing people away in droves. It's often the very reason people seek out other religions like Buddhism. If somebody can't tell that unusual individuals do ...

Ah, a refreshingly honest reply. There are always taboos in science. It was once taboo to suggest that doctors should wash their hands. Although liberals tend to value science more than conservatives, I don't think it's fair to say that a scientific taboo is necessarily based on liberal ideals. I doubt anyone is arguing that there are not genetic differences between racial categories, ...
