The images used in the announcement were very misleading as well, since it gave the impression that all the items shown were included. (normally if they use other items in the pic, they'll list them at the bottom)

That's it exactly. I would have likely paid money (had actually been waiting for my next paycheck to do so), because I do like to support the games that I play, but being forced to, pretty much made me dig my heels in and purposefully not spend anything.

But it's not just that quest that has that requirement though, several of the map expansions require a certain number of friends as well (or again pay cash), not sure about any other items. So at some point - if you aren't able to pay money, then you end up not being able to play the game at all.
I mean even if you wanted to, if you can't afford the map expansions, you run out of room, and ...

My biggest issue is the needing to have a crap-ton of friends part. I don't mind taking days/weeks to save up for something, but I refuse to spam friend requests, or add people that I don't know. I've quit playing any number of other games that were like that, so odds are if it becomes too much of an inconvenience, I'll do the same here.

Not sure about the level up gold, but have you tried refreshing your page? I couldn't find my diedrich either, but when I refreshed, there he was.

I don't have actual nightmares all too often, but I do have weird/unsettling dreams on a fairly regular basis. Though most of the time I can't actually remember what they were, but I'll wake up with that lingering sense of unease.
