Tentacl and zOMG! are shutting down. (admin response) 460 Gaia Community Discussion 11/15/14 6:37am

With you on that. I'm not surprised, because it was inevitable... I must say, the biggest obstacle for me was also the tumblr-like layout. I found the site terribly hard to browse, which is a shame because the tone and maturity of the community (in certain forums) really matched me better than Gaia does these days. I'd really say the layout killed it.

I'd say probably similar. Been here for ten years and the longest break was probably close to a year. There have been periods where I logged in once a month or every couple of weeks. Over the years I've probably seriously "left" a dozen times, but when I'm going through a slow period at work I tend to casually creep back. Can't say I post much anymore though.

Haha, I love the way you worded the topic title. To answer it: Maybe fifteen years ago I checked it out of the library to try to read, but I just couldn't get into it. I got maybe fifty pages in and then threw my hands up. I've never stopped thinking about it though.I will have to try again one of these days.

Is writing commercial fiction bad? 36 Writers 10/9/14 7:46pm

My working knowledge of "commercial" and "literary" fiction is that they are umbrella terms, separate from genre. There is such a thing as literary fantasy (think: Margaret Atwood), as well as commercial. The definitions you provided may be in a nutshell correct, but very narrow... However, I think the whole thing is dumb and fussy and that you shouldn't worry about it. The example I tend to ci ...

I understood your perspective when I wrote "I respect your opinion" and chose not to insert my point of view into what I said for that reason. Have the courtesy to respect mine. I stated only facts. Whether or not you agree with Hemingway's perspective is irrelevant to the information I provided. That is all I will say on the matter.

Hemingway's hacks?? I respect your opinion :gonk: In a nutshell, Twain's style was a sharp departure from European writers working at the same time. Comparatively, his characters are plainspoken and his descriptions are plain as well (lacking embellishment and floweriness). He deliberately wrote about life the way that common people experienced it, in a voice that common people would be familia ...

Your narrator has sort of a heavy hand. If that's what you're doing, it's fine, but part of it is that you are describing every little action. Doing that brings the reader way outside the character (viewing from above) rather than keeping them in the action with the characters. One way to remedy that, if you're keen, is to describe the action as they are experiencing it -- keep it sensory. "She fe ...

Your voice comprises the little things you do (which you might not notice) in writing that others may not. I'd suggest that it comes from writing a ton, reading tons more, and relaxing a little bit. It has little to do with the way you speak irl, and more to do with how you communicate. For example, I've been told by fellow writers that you can tell I'm a second-generation American because of t ...
