The more I see topics like these the more I feel like I should make a chibi tutorial. The only one really helpful so far is Mimay-Neko. A lot of people fail to recognize in chibis is that yes, they have proportions too. Just because they're "SD" (super-deformed) does not mean that the rules of anatomy no longer apply to them. Art books. Definitely. Especially artbooks of movies like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and even Disney movies like Pocahontas and Pinocchio. I highly recommend getting your hands on some Star Wars or even Star Trek artbooks and check out their concept art for inspiration and simply staring as much eye-candy as possible. For me, art is my method of communication of ideas, and advanced form of talking or writing that is much more visual, definitive, and sometimes more expressive. Words are words and are only replacements for ideas, but art is so much more words. It is not stationary, and can be interpreted and defined in many more ways than one. Drawing from your emotions is fine, but usually it's not a good idea to be too emotionally attached to your pictures, especially if you want critiques. I've known people who are more than willing to rip apart artwork and make the artist cry and feel bad about themselves and their work.
