Should I start an art shop? 2 Chatterbox 7/25/14 4:44am

I've been mulling the idea over for a while. What I can't figure out is: 1. What kind of art would I offer? I could do digital, or traditional, or even both, but what is in demand? Just head shots? Full figures? and 2. What is a fair price to charge? The gap between pricing is so extreme from one shop to the next--one will be 5 thousand and the other will be 25 billion! I understand there is ...

Thank you both! I see what you mean about the transitions being choppy--I'll work to make my quick transitions more smooth. I agree I could have made a little more content, i.e. having the mother actually walk in. Usually I do traditional animation and I was having a little difficulty transitioning into digital. Now that I'm a little more familiar, I'll work more on storytelling!

I use Adobe Flash from CS5. It does cost money, but it's reliable. I'm informed there is a program called GIMP which has many if not all of the features of Flash, and is available for free download. I'm also told it has pretty much the same interface.

I FINALLY figured out traditional animation in Flash! I must say, it's a lot less messy than doing each drawing on a whole new sheet of paper. Opinions, critiques? On my deviantArt

Yeah, I'm a sucker for that look, myself. It's a lot harder to pull of than it seems, though, so I really respect how you handled it. ^_^ Good luck!

I actually drew a man today... 23 Art: Comment & Critique 7/14/14 11:37pm

The face is nice and your modeling with lights and shadows is very good! The main thing that threw me off (more than the neck--I prefer to emphasize the sternomastoids, myself) is his abdomen. He only has four abdominals, and the ones he does have are over-emphasized. I would also ad some indication of his ribcage, for added realism to his anatomy. For someone who doesn't draw guys a lot, you ...

It's really impressive you did this with a mouse! I would change the color of the sparkles in the background to a color other than white--they fight for the attention the creature should be receiving. A gold would work because it's darker than white and compliments purple and pink well. Blue would also work and blend more into the background. Overall, it's has good composition and I love the way y ...

Having a Sticky teaching people how to give and receive a critique is an excellent idea. I think it would really help revitalize the Art Comment and Critique forum by bringing back in artists who were disappointed with the unhelpful or discouraging critiques they received.

Thank you for posting this! It's so infrequent to find someone who agrees that a lot of critiques tend to be sub-par and thus harmful to budding artists. I always try my best to give helpful but encouraging critiques that recognize the current level of the artist and addresses their specific issues. In other words, I give the critique I want to receive. Commenting on someone's art about how much o ...

Mostly I rely on Pixel Lovely for interesting poses online. Also, Senshi Stock on DA. Magazines are good, as well, if you have access to ones like National Geographic. Fashion magazines can have some interesting poses, but they tend to be a little static. Even pausing a video mid-motion can yield some fun and dynamic results.

Reading helps. Getting into a character's head opens your mind to expand upon the character traits you found compelling or interesting. Then you can create something that is unique to you. Another way is to Google clothes from different cultures. Exploring how different cuts and styles fit certain body types. Noticing interesting cultural details. Going to a pose reference site also helps. F ...

Well, I would suggest having three layers in your pictures to help keep the painterly look. The first and bottom-most layer would be a base color or background. The second, middle layer would be the figure or subject. The top layer would be your linework. This should help you understand how to utilize your brushes properly. You should try to make the lines in your top layer as smooth and cont ...

It's beautiful! The palm has much better placement. The shadows and highlights on the mermaid are stunning! You should be very proud. Excellent job!
