Spoke to the guy who basically began laparoscopic surgery in the US (small incision while using camera to operate which is not only safer but has a shorter healing time) talking about how surgeons who are/were gamers are so much better at it. I think he said it's because they're used to looking at one thing and using that input to use their hands elsewhere.

New definitions to preexisting words won't make a word collapse; it's a fairly natural part of the English language (as well as many others). People invent new words and new meanings to words all the time. Whether they ever become legitimate in the professional world is another thing entirely but that kind of thing is quite common in colloquialism.

I can't say anything for how others use it but I've always used "hardcore gamer" as meaning "intensely loyal to a specific genre/company/series/etc." E.G. I call myself a hardcore Legend of Zelda fan because I'm specifically devoted to that series. I don't think I'm better than anyone else at it though. I don't know, I found the Cave of Ordeals MUCH harder than anything in Ocarina or Majora's Mask. Though I agree; my friends and I were lamenting how we now are horrible at games we played (and beat) as kids because we're used to more modern games. E.G.
