Eden of the East and Birdy the Mighty: Decode are two I pretty much always recommend.
Although Birdy does have a little tiny bit of fanservice. Seriously. Given what Birdy wears when she's kicking alien a**, I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't turn her into a walking sex object.

Both are good.
But both are also very different.
If you enjoy roaming and exploration, political intrigue, less cutscenes and more gameplay, and a fast-paced mmo type battle system, I'd recommend XII first.
If you prefer a more linear map, character driven plot, lots of pretty cutscenes, and strategy-oriented turn-based combat, you'll want to go with X.

It's been too long since I've played it, sorry. I just kept practicing and got myself acquainted with the course and handling my chocobo.
Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but there may be different chocobos to choose from? Try finding one that suits you.
I heard getting all zeros wasn't enough, that you actually had to get a negative score.
But I won with all zeros. ._.

I like Vaan. I would be lying if I said I wasn't miffed about Basch being sidelined because of him, but I still enjoy him as a character. To me Vaan is almost like a placeholder character for the player. He's an observer not meant to really join in the action but watch as how the story unfolds around him. So his lack of plot involvement doesn't bother me.
