The "Anime Art Trend" 177 Art Discussion 5/7/09 1:35am

If you don't think your own work is good enough to even show people, then why do you feel qualified to give other people advice on how to learn to draw?

Why is it that whenever somebody posts a thread like this, they never share samples of their own art to demonstrate how well they've learned to draw by copying anime or manga? You'd think that this would be very effective supporting evidence but nobody ever does it.

I once ran the fanart auction at an anime con. Don't you dare suggest to me that the fandom has any idea what constitutes worthwhile artwork. "Oh, look. $200 for a 8 1/2" x 11" pinup of done in an imitation cel-style using cheap acrylics on a transparency sheet." In any case, you know how you convince people that your art isn't s**t? You share it with them, and the art itself will do all t ...

I've never seen anybody say this who wasn't completely untalented.

I think people would be most interested in the "professional" short stories (because that suggests that they were published in a professionally-edited magazine or collection of some sort) and in the webcomic (because it would be easily accessible and would demonstrate your ability to handle a long-term narrative).

This sounds almost entirely without originality. I'd be willing to bet that if I was willing to read through old Shonen Jump phonebooks, I could find something exactly like this somewhere in the back where the filler stories go. In short, it reminds me of the sort of characters that 15-year-old D&D players would come up with. This is not a good thing.

Possible upcoming comic publishing company... *updated* 16 Comic Creators 4/16/09 1:05am

Realistically, your company is going to struggle to survive and you will probably have to work a second day job in order to help keep your company afloat. This a terrible time to be starting up new business ventures, especially anything related to print media; the recent changes at Diamond have completely shredded the standard independent comic publisher business plan, for starters. I hate ...

Auditioning artists for a webcomic! 30 Comic Creators 4/13/09 9:38pm

"Twilight" and "The Secret" are best-sellers. So are most romance novels by Nora Roberts. Just because something sells well doesn't mean it's any good at all. Also, I am ashamed that I forgot about Roger Zelazny last night. The first five "Amber" novels are incredible (skip the rest and any Amber books written by other people), and "Lord of Light" straddles the border between fantasy and SF ...

If you want to stick to the fantasy tradition, I would suggest the work of China MiƩville, the non-horror novels of Clive Barker, the prose fiction of Neil Gaiman, the "Fafrd and the Grey Mouser" stories by Fritz Lieber, "Lord Valentine's Castle" by Robert Silverberg, the "Gormenghast" books by Mervyn Peake, the "Earthsea" books by Ursula K. LeGuin (but skip the godawful TV movie), the "Vlad ...
