This was the same argument I heard when webcomics first took off. "Now that anyone can make one, it'll be harder to get noticed." As if it were ever easy. Here's the thing, though. The classical, top-heavy, executive-favoring, creative-exploiting production model Shouting Fox is so eager to drop his pants, grease up, and bend over for? It wasn't doing a very good job. Publishing on a lar ...

Kickstarter is the best thing to happen to independent creatives in a decade. Possibly longer.

The more stubborn and personal your grudge becomes and the less willing you are to acknowledge reason, the less convinced I am we're actually talking about your "friend." But hey, maybe it's just me.

That is without a doubt the dumbest thing I've heard all day. How many people can you name that started off with a creator owned work and have made it work for them profitably? (By which I mean, how many of them are making a comfortable, continual living in comics doing only creator owned work?) The flip side is, how many people can you name that started off working on a company's shitty title ...

Nope. And for the record, I have been plagiarized, for profit. back when I made t-shirts, someone nicked a distinctive design, plastered their URL beneath it, and not only made their own shirts for comic conventions I was also attending, but put it on the main character in their own, terrible comic book. Yes, this pissed me off. I confronted him, and he immediately manufactured an imagin ...

Again, none of this makes Oni "snobbish." For the record, I know Zub. I crash with him and Stacy every time I do TCAF. And I know all about Skullkickers (Zub is rightfully proud of it), so I have a pretty good idea who your friend probably is. And I agree, he's technically accomplished. But that doesn't obligate anyone to hire him. I don't care if his portfolio belongs on a wall in the Lo ...

And you didn't disagree with them, either. And call me skeptical about Bryan, unless you consider an @ on Twitter or slipping him a freebie at a con "aware of your existence." Truthfully, I'd like to try a different publisher, but Sean is in charge of who we send our comic to since it was his story idea. I started working with him after he began selling locally. Then it's probably a good ...

I'll probably only do a single print run, and do a whole new Smut Peddler in two years. Kinda like Flight, but dirty. And the Kickstarter will pay for enough issues to see me through until the next round in 2014. I'll probably get a print run of like 4,000, with 1,000 already spoken for by KS backers and 3,000 to sell for the next two years.

Oni Press isn't "snobbish." Oni Press is an incredibly busy publisher with an incredibly full schedule that states clearly on its website: Don't get pissed at Oni because you can't be bothered to take a hint. A lot of publishers no longer keep slush piles. You should probably find out if the ones you're gunning for will or won't insta-shred your submission before shotgunning them out wi ...

Thanks, everyone! Yup. "Page rates." Standard form of payment in the comic book industry, variable by skill level and notoriety. If you're working for DC or Marvel, it's usually divided up. Page rates for the writer, penciller, inker, letterer and colorist, and a separate rate for the cover artist, which can be in the thousands. This can confuse some inexperienced people into thinking y ...

Fun fact: My Kickstarter just hit $40,000. That means I'm breaking even on the project! Wondering how the hell that works? Watch. $40,000 - $4,000 (Kickstarter takes 5% of the total. Amazon will likely take another 5% in fees.) - $6,500 (The artists' bonuses.) - $8,000 (Printing, storing, and shipping the books.) - $17,000 (Artists' pay. A $50-per-page page rate for a 350-page book, my o ...

My parents actively discouraged me. So now I'm a professional cartoonist. They were persistent. Just not very effective.

My god, He re-launched it. This is the third time. Just out of curiosity, how many more unsuccessful Kickstarter campaigns will you endure before you step back and take a long, hard look at your concept? Because it's obviously not finding an audience. Haven't you wondered why that is?

Hey. My comic Kickstarter just hit goal. 20k in 19 hours, 45 minutes. Just, y'know. Puttin' that out there. I'd link it, but that would probably get me banned. Not gonna lie. I screamed.
