yeah, I wasn't a big fan of it either, but CSS3 is still fairly new which is where they implemented the nth-of-*. It's very nice to work with; no more headaches.

My guide on Custom Sections
In short, your about section is coded wrong. Right now, your custom section is showing up within your main about section, because of positioning. You're using "position:absolute;" (which you shouldn't be) and not positioning it relatively(using margin-top/left), which is what makes that setup work.
