I would go for a witchy kind of look. Cape-sort of cardigan (like, waterfally) or wide tassly scarf as a wrap, and loads of mystical-looking bling. Layered necklaces with spiders on them or something interesting like that. Plain black vest will do. (Vest=sleeveless top)

Zips are more convenient but I've already got boots with both zips and lace-ups and it was annoying me, lol. Missing one lace, what the heck xD Perhaps you could use ribbon as laces, like those Triumph 1914 Docs, if you know the ones I mean. The reason I picked my 1914 plain black Docs is 'cos I wanted boots that go with everything, and doesn't have a superfluous zip. A lot of 14-hole boots have a zip which I didn't want. That's a pretty good deal! Are the ones you won new or used? I did the exact same thing when buying my Docs - went to the big cities and their fancy hip shoe shops and tried on all their size 4 and 5 Docs. (I'm size 4.5 but I wear 5 most of the time.) I don't think there's a lot of point arguing (or stating) whether a shoe type is good or bad because it's so subjective. It's well known that they're apparently comfy but I still think they're dead ugly and it's not like beautiful comfortable shoes don't exist. All those tights are so awesome. I have a mild addiction to buying the coolest tights I see if they're less than £2. Consequently I have quite a lot of £1 black tights with cool patterns on them which I've not worn yet because they're too pretty!

You know I have been thinking about this exact question. I feel like there going to be environments where make-up for women is obligatory as an unwritten rule. When I bought my Docs, I looked into what model I wanted online. They're called the '1914' model so then I went to the nearest city where they have shoe shops which carry DMs and tried on every model they had to see whether I was a size 4 or a size 5. Would you rather be comfortable, or would you rather look good? It sounds like the salon is insisting you do something you don't want to do.
