How do you take screenshots for Macs? 14 Computers & Technology 7/12/05 8:35pm
tetrastar
You could use the Grab application in your Utilities Folder (which, in turn, is inside your Applications folder). With grab, you can capture the current screen, a specific window (or portions of the interface, like a menu or the dock for that matter), or a selection. You could also capture a timed screen, for when you need a picture as you do something that you won't be able to otherwise. You ...

Graphics/Video Card Help 16 Computers & Technology 7/4/05 1:57pm
FlameWolf2009
I'm not sure anyone has noticed, but a lot of Gaians have asked this question which means this is a particularly hot topic as more and more people get into gaming and want to play more demanding games. I think the trend is great, and makes me feel that PC gaming won't die for at least a couple more next-gen console cycles. That said, I thought I'd repost my answer to a similar question a few day ...

Help with Final Fantasy VII Laptop 4 Computers & Technology 7/6/05 10:07am

I found the following instructions on using the ff7input.cfg at Final Gaming: Square Enix Fanzone (emphasis mine):Laptop nummeric keypad patch You will need the laptop patch for FFVII, PC version, due to the lack of a numeric keypad on most laptops. After downloading the patch to your desktop unzip the file "ff7input.cfg" to the installation directory of the game (by default this is C:/Program ...

what do you think the best torrent client is? 20 Computers & Technology 7/4/05 11:52pm
Gundam 597
On what platform? On OS X I particularly like Tomato torrent for it's straightforward interface. Also of interest to Linux, OS X, and Windows users would be the beta BitTorrent clients on the official BitTorrent Home Page. Apart from trying the beta Mac OS X client, however, I have no experience with the other builds.

problem with my mac... 6 Computers & Technology 7/3/05 12:25pm

Have you tried calling Apple support? They were very helpful when I had a major problem with my PowerBook a year ago (HD died on me). Try doing the steps Francias suggested then write down whatever messages you get or better yet, have the diagnostic up and running as you call support. That way, the tech could ask for information and could tell you what to look for and walk you through it.

A podcast is actually an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) with enclosures, usually audio files in mp3 or aac format. An RSS feed is basically an XML document--similar to the html utilized by websites like Gaia Online, only instead of telling a browser how to display data, it contains data like new blog posts, news stories, or in a podcast feed's case, a new enclosure. We're also beginning to se ...

Graphical end to VNC? 3 Computers & Technology 6/29/05 8:31pm
The_Nightbring...
RealVNC has a windows version for free use on Download VNC Free Edition 4.1. They have two paid versions with added features if you need them. I've used RealVNC before and it seemed robust enough, except I think they hadn't implemented a paid scheme at the time.

Are you going to get all that or are you asking us which one we think is the best upgrade option out of all that? If you have to get just one, then I agree with most people that adding 512MB of RAM first would be best for a performance boost. Also, I think we could better judge if the upgrade you're planning will be significant if you give us an idea of the specs you're upgrading from. P.S. ...

Help me find a video card! 5 C&T Tech-Talk 7/3/05 11:07pm
[.Faust.]
Hi, I noticed that you're asking for help here and in C&T. So I thought I'd repost my suggestion and to tell you that I upgraded from a GeForce 4600 Ti to a refurbished GeForce 6600GT a few months ago and hadn't had a problem since. It's still your call if you want to take the risk, however. You can get a refurbished Nvidia 6600 for around $90 (AGP) or a new one for $100 (PCI-E) on newegg rig ...

Better Graphics Card 8 Computers & Technology 6/28/05 2:30am

I would suggest getting a 6600GT over a 9800 Pro or even ATi's 9800XT because it performs on par with and sometimes trounces these former top of the line cards. NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT: Bringing NV4x to the Masses THG Graphics Card Buyers Guide: GeForce 6600 If you would rather have an ATi video card, then go for the X700, the same could be said about the part as it goes against the 9800 Pro ...

Video Card Help! 3 Computers & Technology 6/28/05 2:03am
[.Faust.]
You can get a refurbished Nvidia 6600 for around $90 (AGP) or a new one for $100 (PCI-E) on newegg right now depending on what you need. You could also opt for a slightly better 6600GT for around $130. If you prefer a mainstream ATi then you might want to get an x700 for around $80 for refurbished and $90 new. The X700 is only available for PCI Express at the moment though, so if you have AGP ...

Can't get into website... 13 Computers & Technology 6/28/05 2:31am

Well, what I understand from the thread is that the guy was able to at least browse, but not log into, deviantart.com by using an in-browser proxy that he found. So if you don't need to log in you might want to try that. However, I'm guessing that you do want to log in so the fix that worked for him was changing the MAC address of his router to match that of his computer. According to the thr ...
