I play Gen IV on occasion when I feel like training my Platinum team to level 100 or EVing some of my HG buddies, but for the most part I'm sticking to Gen V just for simplicity's sake. I still have a lot of endgame content and training to get through before the release of XY

I'm actually enjoying this. Knowing the entire region, all of the Pokemon and every gym leader before you even got the game killed a little bit of the fun for me. Gone were the days of "What type is THAT thing?" or "How the fsck do I evolve you?" - everything was right there for us before day one. With the global release, it'll be just like when Red and Blue version released. I'm excited

I can't remember my source at the moment, but I think they've announced 50+ Pokemon to be added at least (which is a fair step down from before). Other than that, all we've got to go on is the three starters and the two legendaries. See, my reasoning behind the BW2 as opposed to a hypothetical Gray version is because Gray is not a marketable color. Black and white are both bold colors that stand out, but Gray is a muddy, middle-area color that doesn't draw attention. The HGSS mechanic of having a Pokemon following you was excellent and really deepened the experience of the game, since your team members felt more like Pokemon and less like data. I would love it if GF would bring back that idea, but based on the trailers for XY, that doesn't seem likely.

Objectively speaking, Arceus is the best. It has a higher BST than any other Pokemon in the game, which allows it fulfill pretty much any role effectively. Combine that with the ability to be whatever type it wants and with a gigantic movepool and you have yourself an unstoppable killing machine. I'm not huge in the competitive scene, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I'm not sure about your dual-weather strategy - I'd take a full Rain Dance team, since Politoed will take a dump on anyone trying to run a sand or sun team. Typically in Rotation battles you're going to want a wall and two sweepers in play at once, so I'd take something tankier alongside Politoed and Electivire to start ...

I'm not a fan of two out of the three starters, but that's alright because that's been the case with almost every generation and I've gotten over it (except with you, Chimchar. You're still stupid-looking). I caught a fscking Rattata in my HeartGold game. Needless to say, I was severely disappointed. Fortunately, I would eventually find another shiny in my copy of Emerald version. Friend of mine's the same way. Doesn't want to compete - but playing together is almost more fun anyways. That's why GoW's Horde mode was so popular when it launched. But I digress. Gotta say I really loved the new album. Wasn't too much of a fan of "OC Guns", but the rest of it was really solid. Very definitely kept their style and delivered excellent songs. I was also a huge fan of "Cruisin' California", that track's hilarious.

Can't help you there. I'd suggest helping them to get better by taking them into PVP matches with a smurf account (I'm assuming you're higher leveled than they are). S'what my friends did for me when I first got into the game and it certainly helped me improve.
