Oh, and since Cocacola bottling has its roots down here, any soda is a "coke" in southern lingo. It confuses people at times... "Is pepsi ok?" "Lady, I just want some carbonated sugar-water in a cup. Don't get all technical."

Yeah, both of my parents speak with a neutral American accent, so I usually do, too. But, if I get excited or especially angry, this thick, thick accent starts coming out that's about 50/50 southern drawl/late 90's ebonics. The latter part 'cause I grew up near Atlanta. Ooo, accents. I love these. Now, the old southern accent, which is sadly going extinct, is the non-rhotive form like you find still in Savannah and parts of Appalachia. Like Foghorn Leghorn. That's the one where r's are unvoiced. The modern forms tend towards neutral American in a lot of areas, especially urban areas, and that's a sad thing. I would imagine anyone saying that is confusing "the south" with "the deep south." A fine distinction and not all definitions agree, but, yes, anyone claiming it's anything other than southern is mistaken. I'd get mad, too.

Yeah, I'm southern-grown, too. Never been further north than Maryland, nor west than Huntsville. I'm surprised no one picked up on that what with the way I throw around "ya'll" and "reckon." I guess I did go north once, 'cause I've been to Florida and those people are yankees. Immigration, I reckon.
