some of it is less 'ancient' but still operates the same way. legacy would imply that there are better or more efficient ways to do what we're already doing, and that's simply not that case. as an example, we program the presses via a serial connection, it's such a small payload that it could just as well be considered instantaneous, we can plug in, dump the programming, and unplug. using usb wo ...

well most of the problem, i think, is that we don't use device drivers to communicate with the device, we use it more like what i imagine a null modem worked like, as far as windows device manager is concerned, there's nothing on the other end of the port. our printers work the same way, just copy a file to lpt1

you won't be able to 'independently verify' any of it anyway, nothing pictured is off-the-shelf, it's all custom s**t made a decade ago to run presses that don't exist in that exact configuration anywhere else on the planet. why do i need you to verify anything? they don't work when we use usb-to-serial devices, we're not sure why, but the communication just doesn't work, it's very chipset ...

PLCs, certain types of barcode reader, other computer machine interface devices.

why in the hell are you signing your post,,,,? second: serial to usb converters don't always work with those devices, something i come across on a nearly daily basis.
