It would seem I have overlooked a suggestion. About the internet speed my laptop as well as my brother's netbook and laptop run perfectly quickly on this particular internet connection and I have tried at several of the wifi networks that my university provides as well as my girlfriend's private home network and all have produced the same results as mine at home.

It's not an Acer it's an Asus if that changes things. I would like to test the drive and am not really sure how to go about identifying the brand of drive it is or where to go to get the appropriate testing utility.
In reference to the earlier suggestions of removing some of the extraneous antivirus software I have done so and have not noticed an increase in performance so it appears that ...

The Asus EEE PC 1005 HA model is indeed a netbook and not a notebook.
Removing suggested anti-virus programs at the moment then I will be doing a system reboot and using the system for today to see if makes a notable difference.
Open to any questions about previous netbook and current netbook if it helps evaluate this issue. I am not entirely tech savvy so what you request of me I may ...
