This may sound stupid, but it really is quite often the answer! Remove the thread and bobbin both completely and rethread the machine. My machine was "broken" for days as I swore that it was threaded correctly. Here's how I would do it. The waist band doesn't have to actually go quite all the way around, but even if it did, you could just overlap the ends--the sashes (which obviously have to be much longer than in my picture) will hold everything is place after wrapping them around your waist several times like in the pictures.

Try some elastic cord instead of the wire and you won't need clasps. :3
