I'm sure the general excuse for this is "I'm a girl so it's okay." Making perverted comments or actions towards another female doesn't make it any better than if a guy were doing it, considering these are complete strangers.

You didn't have to post this on two forums. It kind of makes you look like you're fishing for compliments. Just FYI. Cosplayers can be harsh sometimes but it comes with the territory. If you know it's just BS you can disregard it and move on.

Then cosplay a character you like from a franchise you like, if character likeness doesn't matter to you. Pick something simple and low-stress that's within your capabilities, since it's your first costume. This is entirely up to you.

I think this piece of s**t more or less speaks for itself. It used to be a full-length bob wig that I bought for Ed from Cowboy Bebop for Halloween 2004, and cut a year later for a half-assed Kyo Sohma, despite it being completely the wrong colour. I find it amusing that most of the people who shout DO IT RIGHT OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL are usually people whose standards for others are far higher than those they apply to themselves, and whose costumes are often mediocre at best. Prove me wrong, and don't give me a "Don't need to be a chef to know what tastes like s**t" copout excuse.

It's hard to tell what your influences are there so I can't rightly say what would be the best idea. However, my best suggestion is to go out and visit a fabric store, and look for materials that will match your colours first. Don't be scared! I've been going to Anime North since I was 14 years old. Bring some friends so you'll always have a buddy with you, and have a blast. However, as harmless as people may seem, don't be too trusting with strangers. That's just common sense.
