Well, if you want the story to remain tragic, you should kill them off. If you'd rather the story end on a happier note, rewrite the ending. It really all depends on what kind of story you're aiming to create. Try putting your personal feelings and attachments aside for a little while and think of what's best for the story. Well, just think where you want to your characters to start out. Is the main character in the middle of a fierce battle to the death, or is s/he in a peaceful field about to find out tragic news? Just start it out with a certain mood in mind and maybe tell a few details about the characters, but not too many. It's usually best to start out with some sort of action. In any case, good luck!
