Oooh, today during lunch, I ate two candy bars. *clutches stomach* When my friends asked for some I said "Mello shares his chocolate with no one!!" and I sadly gave them only one peice. Xp

I haven't seen these puppies you all are talking about, so I'll have to find them later...

That part in the trailer for the second DN movie, I think that they just put Rem laughing, or maybe someone else, on top of the image of Rem. Because, it just don't look like Rem is actually laughing...

@ Silver: If you want to see what some of the polls were in the past, go to the first page and to the post called "Our Thread". =D

@ Breneko: That's how I pronounced Mello's name. But I think "Nate River" don't have a weird pronunciation.

Edit: Page 101! *dances*

How do we know it's mello's birthday? o_O
how old is he turning; 16? (he was fifteen in 2005 I think....)
This is how. He's turning 17 (1989/12/13). OMG I just realized that that page has how to pronounce Mello's name on it! *reads*

Mihaeru Keeru

Pronounced as: Mi-hah-el Kehl (Ke as in kept, not keep)

I always pronounced it Me-high-l Key-l

Kell is closer to his last name pronounciation-wise than Keehl.

hey cool!
I forgot about that stuff.....
hey Near was born exactly three months before me....!
mogi's social skills are almost as weak as Ls...
*ish flipping through volume 13*
matt is like a dumber near.... eek (according to the little statish thingies)
he's a year older than me....
The person closest to me in age... is Light *growls* Light is one year older than me and Mello is two years younger.

Hey! Mello and Sayu are the same age!

weird.
you know actually It seems like Mello's name should be pronounced "Mee-hall keel"
I mean, for one thing he isn't japanese is he?
neither is Near; is Near's name pronounced "Nah-Te Ree-vehr"?
I do know what I'm talking about. His name isn't pronounced Mihaeru, I know that, but it IS pronounced similar to that. Me-hah-el would be how it's pronounced.

And don't romanize if you don't know what you're talking about. Near's name is romanized "Neito Ribaa". If you pronounce it correctly in Japanese, it sounds similar to Nate River, so you know that is how it is pronounced.

By the same logic, pronouncing "Mihaeru Keeru" correctly in Japanese would lead you close to the pronounciation I have pointed out. /pissiness

edit: I apologize for my attitude, but I just finished off a really difficult Japanese final and I'm a little defensive of people questioning my grasp on something as simple as katakana

eeeek!
no, I know that you are correct.
What I'm saying (specifically about Near's name)
is if it was in fact intended to be Nate River, it seems as though it should still be pronounced Nate River, as he is English, not japanese......

Again, they pronounce it the best they can. YES, Near's name is pronounced Nate and not Neito. HOWEVER, reading the katakana can clear up pronounciation confusion. English is a hell language where the same letter has up to, like, 20 pronounciations.

Like Lawliet. How the hell do you pronounce Lawliet?

Rohraito, says the katakana, so in English it would be something close to "low-light"

Reading the katakana just lets us know how to say the vowels, really, in the name. I NEVER would have thought to pronounce Keehl as it is supposed to be pronounced, but since the vowel sounds in Japanese NEVER change, you don't have to worry about your pronounciation being incorrect because you read that 'soft e' as a 'hard e'.

edit: I don't pronounce Near's name with accents either. I don't pronounce Mello's with weird accents, either.

But... but... but that's the POINT of katakana.

*bangs head against desk* The Japanese katakana pronounciation is more correct than our pitiful attempts of pronouncing it ourselves. Low-light is how Lawliet is pronounced, no matter how you or I might think it would be pronounced. There is no arguing the facts. Reading katakana is like hearing the word spoken.

I didn't even know that the names are pronounced different ways in Japanese.
I thought maybe it was just the English translations and in Japan they're different.

Well really....I understand the logic behind what Ky's saying too. Death Note was produced in Japan so of course they're going to pronounce it differently then us. Infact, it's the correct pronunciation because that's how the author wanted it to be pronounced, right? What we're doing though, at least I think, is changing the pronunciation to match how our language accents certain things.

It's the same thing for other languages too. They change the way names are pronounced.

But I understand where you are coming from Breneko. xD They were english names so the author probably intended them to be pronounced as such, but really there's not much of a difference. Like Ky said, if you pronounce it right in Japanese it sounds REALLY close to how we pronounce it.

Sorry if none of that made sense. My brain is still dead...

ech; actually logic won on all accounts.
your right that it would be pronounced the way it would be in japanese, cause that's how it was originially written.
It also makes sense if it was intended to be pronounced as a european name.

Logic DIDN'T just lose. What don't you understand about the fact that katakana can only be pronounced one way? It's a heck of a lot more logical than English, where something like Lawliet could be pronounced a bazillion ways.

Nate River is not a Japanese name, true. But if there's only one way to pronounce katakana, then why would you pronounce katakana differently based on the origin of the name? That doesn't make sense.

Excuse the bad mood, I just got back from my therapist *twitch*. Also excuse anything blatantly wrong with this post. I don't know a thing about Japanese or katakana. It just seems to me that if something can only be pronounced one way, then it can only be pronounced one way.
