Sub-Commander, like Queen Lorelei, gets power boosts if you haven't cleared most of the monsters in their domain.

I don't remember the exact in-game message word for word.

But basically if you try to attack the Sub-commander with a bunch of his minions still on the screen there is a chance that he will get powered up by them and the result is what you see.
[The message says something about power-alignment]

Hence in the smeb crews I usually join... we usually don't go all the way down to the sub commander without taking out the other subs first.
