Are there any areas that once you pass, you can't go back to?
For example, the train? Or the sewers? Because that will affect whether I stay in the sewers longer to get those badges.
Besides bragging rights, do the badges do anything?

You can't go back to the sewers once you leave.

I don't know if you already have this information, but I've got the colour coding matched with the gnomes and their ranks:

Red = Regular
Blue = Courier
Yellow = Major/General/Adviser

For a Major to appear, the Courier must get to the Major's mushroom house. (Not definite... just what I've observed.)
