~*A Wolven Kind of Poetry Tournament*~

Table of Contents
post 1 - Prompt, Fees, and Guidelines (you are here)
p.2 - Judges and Our Affiliates
p.3 - Entrants and Banners
p.4 - Entries
p.5 - Prizes and the Scoreboard/Winner's Circle
p.6 - The all important Thank you's

I need at least 15 contestants to begin. One overall winner will be awarded 1000g, and then the 10 best will be selected, and the next round, with a different prompt, will begin. Another winner will be chosen, another 1000g awarded, and then the five best from that group will be selected and given a third prompt. From this, a third winner will recieve 1000g. The judges will then decide the first, second, and third place winners overall (to be chosen from the five remaining contestants)! All prompts will deal with wolves/werewolves and the like! *Also, the prompts will get a little harder each round, so be warned!*

Critiques: 100g to the judge that you want the critique from

NOTE: No more people will be accepted. Round 2 consists of the semi-finalists. No new fee is due. You may still pay for a critique -if you haven't already-. The 100g covers all critiques.

Winning entries of each round will remain on display for Gaia!

DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! (finally) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

~*~Third Prompt: Rather than the big bad wolf type of fairy tale, write a "biggest, best, kindest wolf" type fairy tale- in the form of a poem. Done!

~*~Second Prompt: Transformation to Werewolf Done!

~*~First Prompt: Description of A Wolf~*~ Done!

Rules/Guidelines:

1. Basically, follow the rules of Gaia. Keep it pg-13, be nice or keep your mouth shut (or rather, take your hand off the keyboard!), etc.

2. Preferably pay and post at roughly the same time.

3. Try to keep the poem under 100 lines.

4. Don't badger myself or the other judges about when the judging will be done. It's annoying and if you're persistent enough, you will get disqualified, with no money refunded. Also, I SHALL SET THE WOLVERINES ON YOU! *see page 48 for more details*

5. Now, I am a wolf lover. However, I will not be biased against a poem if it doesn't show the good nature of wolves. I understand that they make great villians ( gonk crying emo ) and I will tolerate it for this contest. If I don't, I'm sure the other judges will -massacre- me for you razz *I had better not be biased then, huh..... sweatdrop *

6. If you have a question about the prompt, PM me. Please don't ask me if yours is good or not, don't offer bribes, don't plead with me to let you win. By asking a question, I mean either asking me about the question itself, or running an idea by me to double check if it follows the prompt.. I mean a summary, not the whole poem... I've been unsure about stuff before, so I'm willing to let it slide... once... Not ten times !

The Sorrow of Gray Fur

In a fairy land that fairies have forsaken
Sleeps a golden child who never can awaken.
Until the bitter curse is lifted from the sleeping
She’s guarded by a Wolf, oath and vigil keeping.

In age before demise, in time before the sorrow,
Ruled the regal creatures guarding their tomorrow.
Hawk and stag, fowl and furred, gave their counsel sylvan.
But respected above all was the Council of the Wolven.

Thus it came as great surprise when a daring gambit thrown
Resulted in the checkmate and the wolves were overthrown.
Nik, the steel-eyed eagle, had in darkness sought the skills
Of those who eat their children and sundry other kills.

His mind was smeared with madness, his eyes wide and manic
His every clack and scream threw the woods into a panic
He longed for all dominion, and struck the weakest wild.
He called for the destruction of Gray Fur’s feral child.

“It isssn’t a real creature,” Nik clucked in mad display
“Abandoned by its owners, should have let it die away.”
Gray Fur groaned and circled the toddler to imply
He’d never let them hurt her, or if he failed, he’d die.

The human baby growled and bared her pearly maws
Amused animal laughter went through the council jaws.
But the pity of the forest went to the tragic sight;
The emaciated aged guarding the pup he called Daylight.

Nik realized that no one was taking seriously his words
Til he opened up his beak and released the curse of evil birds
“By cluck and claw I bind you, by scream you are defiled
Your nest to death I send you, Gray Fur’s foreign child!”

The blue eyes closed
The pack rose

The Wisest of the pack heard this dreadful curse
But did not fear the power inside the bloody verse
Instead she whispered softly an ancient promise rune
That rose in grander volume as she sang unto the Moon.

The forest watched
Finally she spoke

“The Moon has given counsel and granted us her power
To seal the fate of evil and protect us in this hour
We do not spill the blood of our precious children
We do not take the legacy of our ancient brethren.”

She turned to Nik
He fidgeted

“The evil that’s inside you will keep you in its coils
You won’t escape its clutches through death or mortal toils
You’ve bound the nest of Gray Fur, but your soul is bound as well
You must repent your words and deeds or live in endless hell.”

Gray Fur moaned the agony of a parent still bereft
Then barked in startled joy at the risings of her chest.
Collectively a gasp went round the Wolven keep.
The Wisest One had fallen dead to alter death to sleep.

“I’ll kill it yet, she’ll die by me,” claimed the rabid fowl
And at that fateful moment a Wolven law was howled
One warrior to guard the pup, to keep her from all harm
Until the workings of a conscience obliviate the charm.

Nik lives a life of torment and always feels the eyes
Of the Wisest One’s upon him and curses his demise
If once he will regret the evil deeds he caused
Daylight will awaken and the vigil will resolve.

The legend’s told to pups when they’re drifting into sleep
To remind them of their honor and the promise they must keep
Most think it a quaint story and forget it when they’re grown
But once a year a wolf is chosen to make that trek alone

Past the silver forests that need a dose of polish
Through the dusty trails the goblins have demolished
Into the fairy land that fairies have forsaken
To guard the little child who might someday awaken.

Panthino the Moth
romulus, the cub

consider the wolf.

sharp yellow eyes pierce
the fabric of the night, fixed
on the pulsating vein
of your neck. every shaggy hair
outlined against the crystalline snow,
and stalked by muddy tracks
laid down by guilty claws.

but think on this:

my brother and i, still wet and slick
from the salty fluid
of womb and water

washed up
on a stony bank, where shards of rock
cut our reaching, grasping hands,
and the weather beat us back
towards the river grease.

but our hands touched fur,
warm flesh, soft as down,
and we dragged ourselves
up to the teats. milk trickled
down the fat, round limbs of our baby bodies,
and pooled in the hollows
of our joints.

stone commemorates her milk,
and has immortalised
her tender teeth: and beneath her,
we brothers, who clutched at the bosom
of a wolf.

Mahayr
Change

The wolf went to check on the pigs.
He made some repairs on their digs.
He left them some treats
home-made pickled beets
with bananas and dates and fresh figs!

Then over to grandma's nice house.
He dusted and ousted a mouse.
Then cooked a fine roast
and said a fine toast
to all creatures was his espouse.

Off again, mama goat's at the store.
She warns seven kids - lock the door.
So he never knocks
just leaves presents and socks
quite enough to charm four plus four more.

Another remembered a kindness.
Awakening him from self-blindness.
so each day to the trees
a woodsman to please
and prove he keeps generous mindness.

EmeraldRaiin
the queen & her beasts.

the golden, golden eyes of the princess awaken .
paws of grey,
canines of white,
she stands as sun illuminates night.

she darts through the olden leaves, crackling at her feet
ears so sharp,
optics wide,
upon her land, she smiles in pride.

a last crack in the leaves, and she gazes down into the mist
meadows so thick
wolves in dance
they spiral and mingle in romance

she basks in the glow of the intricate melody
barks of strength,
howls of life,
she gazes once more and her reign is alive.

~*Winning Entries*~

Round One
Eidolon

Out on the Bandit's Mountain
Beyond the Summer's breeze
Out where the moon is hiding
Where Winter's whirlwinds freeze

There at the top of a tower
Slick with sleet and snow
Stands the pale wolf Phantom
His eyes shine bright with woe

“Step back from ghostly tower,
And the Horror that waits within.
Step back and go to summer,
And never, never come in”

Ashen fur washed ivory
Beneath the icy fall
His voice seems but a whisper
But try to mark his call

The seekers battle Winter
No if or why or when
This, the wolf's forewarning,
Falling deaf on deafer men:

“Step back from ghostly tower,
And Wraith of Winter's reign
Step back and go to Summer,
And live to love again”

The Beast is bound and timeless
A long ago servant of cold
His spirit a slave to bloodshed
He cannot escape it's hold

Desperate he screams out a caution
Knowing he has to obey
But efforts are quelled by the maelstrom
And hoping then turns to dismay

“Step back from ghostly tower,
Know now that death will claim
Step back and go to summer,
Don't play this foolish game”

Now many men have fallen,
Ne'er knowing the Eidolon's tale
Nor hearing the baleful mourning
Of the dead one's haunting wail

They go to the tower to seek it
The 'fortune' of shadowed lore
All that sought have found him
And not what they're looking for

“Step back from ghostly tower,
Leave me to frozen tears
Step back and go to summer,
No matter what wealth appears”

But in the Wind will lead them
Up to the top of the spire
There, they think, is treasure
But the Wind is a dreadful liar

He tried to warn the seekers
With a howl that's cold and still
But never do they hear him
And the wolf must always kill

Round Two
Night Terrors

He wakes and feels his tendons twitching
His canines aching, dry throat itching
He feels the eve of soul form switching
And an ownward march of dark.

His mother packs a hamper
Thinks, "He never was a camper,
but that doesn't seem to damper
His trips each month to Crescent Park."

With crusted lips he says goodbye
Forcing laughter, horror to deny,
But a mother knows a troubled eye
And the working of the Mark.

"Fight it, son, with tooth and claw
The night is not the final law
Protect those near your fatal flaw
And don't bite if you can bark."

He drops his shaggy head to hers
She strokes the hair akin to furs
And scripturally she avers
Light will triumph over dark.

Moon is rising
Darkness falling
Self despising
Nature calling

Speed away
Reach the grounds
Just in time...

His shoulders crack like switchblades
The nostrils flare like famine
His orbits cut the world in halves
The claws replace the fingers
Holding on to sanity.
But it's buried with humanity
'Neath a headstone called a legend
Twisting with reality,
A myth he can't escape.

Where'd he get the bones?
Don't ask.
The blood stains on his hands?
Don't think.
The loping gait?
Don't dare.
Should we stop him?
Let him roam.

Shadows snared with lunacy,
Torments of the lunar deity.
But a mother keeps the light on
In case her son can make it home.

Winter Wolf

A touch of ice in the air
A breeze, the scent of pine needles
And deep forest as it wakes from slumber
The sun sheds its first tendrils across
The snow-covered valley

I open my eyes, like golden
Jewels upon grey velvet
A flash of movement
As the starling lights above me
The first song of morning

Silver motes against a silver backdrop
The sun plays with falling crystals
Of snow
The air is thick with the taste
Of the storm to come

I crack my jaws and taste
The ice-filled air with a yawn
Still the sun dances
And plays between the scattered
Silver-dusted pines

I drink in the cold air
Invigorating
My song echoes
Between snow and sky
A clarion note upon the morning

A flash of irridescent green
The starling darts
Into the sunlight
A jewel against grey
Mountains crowned with cloud

The sun makes dappled shadows
Across the forest floor
I return
To the deep shelter of the pines
While all the world awakes
From slumber

Pup

"Mommy! Mommy! Read to me!
This one's my favorite.
Look! You see?
His tail is curled up to his nose!
I bet it itches."

"I'll tickle all your baby toes."

"Mommy! Mommy! Turn the page!
He likes to run and sniff the ground.
See, the puppy's just my age!
He's chasing all his puppy friends.
It looks like fun."

"I bet his mom brings him home again."

"Do you think he'd be my friend?
Mom, maybe if I was really nice
He'd let me pet his head and then
We'd run, but I won't get hurt.
He'd keep me safe."

"He'd bring you home to me, I'm sure."

"Mommy! Look at what he eats!
We might as well be just the same!
Milk like me, and bits of meat!
We're kind of brothers, him and me.
Except I have two legs."

"Let's close the book tonight, my son.
I don't like the thought of my baby boy
Running with teeth and claws and tongue
Far from where I keep you warm.
I fear for you."

"You're so silly, Mom!"

But I wish that were the only kind
Of wolf that I would need to fear.
I'd sooner trust you to a bear
Than to the beasts I find near here.

Outside the door, behind the screen,
Inside the store, in between,
Curtains drawn, doors unlocked
Gritted teeth, pistol cocked.

"Hold close your fair ideas, my son,
And perhaps you'll be the lucky one
To hold a paw within your hand
And be kin
Instead of wolf and man."

EmeraldRaiin
Story of the Beast

Distant howling in dark heart of the land.
A foreign language that no one else can understand.
A pack of creatures pacing quickly to the moon.
With their heads held high they'll sing their suttle tune.

Skies erupting, rain will fall upon their skin.
Fur sagging down they wimper silently and break within.
Sun is up; their eyelids opened and their stomachs void
The pack now risen, hunts and kills til pray's destroyed.

Long days and nights spent on the edge of the horizon
Young pups be led by all the old and all the wizen
The alphess stands her ground as sun beams down upon all
Never will the alphess die and never will she fall.

As summer nears, the wolves begin to show affection.
Alpha and alphess create their children of perfection.
Pups born deaf and blind, they look up to their mother.
To them she cares for them and warms them like no other.

Alas, the year is coming to a silent end.
Winter hit the mainland; now the snow starts to descend.
The pups alive and well, now hunting their own happy feast.
And thus comes an end to the story of the beast.

Keneran-Akeno
My Brethren

My brethren
Your heart
Beating so wildly
Inside of you….

My brethren
Your gleaming coat
Shines so
Beside the moon…

And my brethren
Your powerful jowls
Chomp so delicately
Around the neck of that rabbit.

My brethren
I know you would never be
Like them

I knew you weren’t that wolf
In Little Red Riding Hood
Or those three pigs.

And my dearest brethren
With your canines so white

Howl with me once more
In snowy winters night.

Panthino the Moth
Garou Empaillé

The heart was only
a flash of red in the monster’s mouth.
Teeth danced down, and squeezed
water from stone. Mud
clasped to matted fur, and oozed
out from gritted claws.

Clouds of steaming breath
surged into the sudden silence:
only the sound of moving jaws
broke the heady buzz of joy
and death. With the sudden hot stink
of flesh revealed, I pressed my hand
closer to your tangled mass.

I thought your eyes flashed, but
it was only a faint movement
behind my shoulder. Pads more used
to snow-grasped slopes
remained plastered with glue
to a ground of painted twigs and leaves.

Mind full for the day, I set my sights
on the next glass cage.

Keriea
A wolf's Moonlight Song

Graceful and swiftly running,
it's claws crunch above the snow.
The melody of swaying trees,
In Winter's marvelous show.

Her blue eyes shining greatly,
A howl in the night,
A wolf in winter's show,
Majestic is it's bite.

Catching a fish from the river,
swooping it into the air.
Her silver coat shimmering,
Rapunzel-like long hair.

A howl in the moonlight,
a running she will go,
The wolf who solemnly runs,
Her claws crunch above the snow.

Mahayr
Crystal moon and frozen grass
dawn is coming slowly.
Prismed tears and fading past
greyed and cooled, the glory.

Rainbow wine and tarnished ring
wolves are treading lightly.
She can't hear the pigeons sing.
Tie her wrists more tightly.

Inquisitive Solitude
Once in a blue moon
I like to pretend
we were all what
we aspired to be in
the days of puppyhood.

The free spirit,
Old Ones still sing about.
Haunting ancient tree nurseries
with lingering snarls
at the sunrise.

I like to close my eyes,
and pretend that
this metal cage
is
Freedom.

The Beautiful Wolf
(Nightmare as a dream)

The night draws foward
Through the thin white clouds
As mountains surround the horizons
Of the shadowing moon crawling out

As the moon rises howls surround
The empty atmosphere thumping like a heart
That portrays the hunger Where jaws
May strike its prey apart

As packs arise
I see a beautiful snow white Coat
Above me, with a shimmering
Silver above the snout and around the throat

The howls become louder and Closer
Along come more footsteps
4 by 4 Trotting along
I see Teeth and fangs and hear starvaneous breaths

Saliva Drips on the cold floor
Echoes through the hills of such odd silence
As the liquid brushes through the grass
I Feel it Hit my hand with great violence

Danger is near I see it in his eyes
For the wolf stands about 4 feet tall
Greenish Yellow eyes staring angrily
And then it bites, and at last I wake to nothing at all

I pant with relief Sweating
All over my clothes and sheats
As my nightmare fascinated me, I turn on the lights
And I see a beautiful wolf like in my dream

AKA: I reserve a spot in advance, because I'm just that cool. Even though I don't know exactly what the contest is about, or what the prizes are, but that's okay! I ENTER!

Also, good luck on getting the grant!
Wolven Poet

More info to be added later, and a possible grant will help up the prizes drastically!

Awesome! All I need now are the judges, so I can finish my grant app., list them on here, figure out how much I need to raise to be able to PAY them, and post what they would want in order to do critiques...
I'm here.

Where do you want me to set up my booth?
