Woot! Go for Contests! (Though I am envious of your artz.)

If you give me the money, I can commision the artist for you. I am a regular customer so it might save you some money if the order goes through me.

I'll admit, I am too lazy and cheap to really care. It's nice of you to offer, though. If I change my mind, I'll get in touch with you.

Also - are you a regular customer because of all your contests, or do you commission a lot of other art?

A Demon's Indulgance

Mitsukai landed gently and folded his enormous wings behind him, his roughed up boots leaving no trace of his presence other than two small dust clouds. The air was dry and crackly, tasting faintly of burned flesh and charred wood. The demon frowned, his eyes flitting around quickly, surveying the area, as his slightly pointed ears pricked up, causing his head to tilt in one direction. Someone was alive. A small someone, a very weak someone, but a someone nonetheless. Misukai's scowl became more pronounced, and his thin eyebrows furrowed in annoyance.

A light breeze began to blow around the demon, carrying with it cinders from the still burning city. They exploded against his cool skin, leaving small sooty marks where they landed. He struck an impressive figure; his flawless pale skin all but glowed in the distant firelight, obscured slightly by the waist length jet-black hair swirling around him, propelled by the growing wind. A tight fitting, well-worn brown leather vest showed the curves of his muscular chest and lean stomach, stopping an inch above his plain black pants. A tattered leather halter on his upper left arm held a large hunting knife, to be used in emergencies; otherwise, his arms were bare.

A grimace curled Mitsukai's upper lip as he began his search for the survivor. This was not work for him; he was so talented, so promising; and yet he was the government's dog. What was it that he had done? It was so very long ago… None of it mattered now, though a twinge of grief began to well up in the demon's chest as he thought of his banishment. 'A life for a life' was the saying…a life for a life, and expulsion for the saved, it seemed, in Mitsukai's case.

Slowly, the dark-haired demon made his way around the area he thought the smell was coming from. He got more annoyed every step; the ghastly odors wafting toward him from the burning city were messing with his scent perception, and throwing off his search. But even with these distractions, Mitsukai soon spotted a quivering lump on the dusty ground to his left. His eyes, smoldering darkly with irritation, narrowed as he approached the prone form. It looked like a young child, maybe thirteen or fourteen, with soot-stained blond hair and…a tail? A thin crease appeared between the demon's brows as he nudged the boy with his boot. The child groaned and curled the large tail around himself slowly.

After several minutes of watching the youngster, Mitsukai bent over him and gently flipped him onto his back, stepping away again quickly as he started coughing. The demon waited patiently for the fit to be over, then made his way back into the child's line of vision.

"You should be dead. Long dead." Mitsukai's voice was low and quiet, carrying with it years upon years of sorrow and guilt. His eyes were no longer glimmering; instead, a look of dull, hardened desperation lingered there, a remnant of a time long ago when desperation and need were the only things that kept him alive. He bent again, staring into the wide, startling blue eyes that followed his every move. The child said nothing, but his tongue did flick out from between his grimy lips nervously, retreating again when he tasted the soot around his mouth.

Mitsukai said nothing else, settling on simply watching the child, who stared right back, unperturbed by the demon's gaze. It seemed like an hour before the young one looked away and struggled to his hands and knees, then his feet, and began trying to walk away. Mitsukai rolled his eyes and stood, deftly catching the child as he tripped over his own feet. The demon slung the boy over his shoulders and spread his massive wings; it was time to go home. This child seemed out of the ordinary, and the old demon needed an escape from his monotonous life.

Mitsukai knew what returning to Hell would imply; he had broken the law and was a traitor, and would be executed. He had recognized it long ago, and the only thing that had halted his return then was respect for his victorious dead. But those memories were dusty now, collecting dirt like a small child's toy, tucked away as he grew. No, death was not Mitsukai's worry now. He expected to be relieved of this life soon enough, and there was no better way to bring it about then breaking the law and making an interesting little friend in the process. The little one did not deserve to die, and, though Mitsukai knew it wasn't exactly his place to save the child, being the one that caused his problems in the first place, he refused to leave him out in the elements. Demons weren't terrible, just very misunderstood. Mitsukai chuckled to himself as he thought this; why not wallow in some self-pity and indulge a smidgen before death?

Is the fantasy prompt for February only, or the whole length of the contest?
