Smoky Fruit

I remembered her sigh as she watched him go, a trail of smoke lingering behind him. I had looked up at her face, wrinkled lines quivering and tears unspoken. She looked down at me with a tired smile.
“There he goes with the love of his life,” she whispered. “The fruit only few have resisted.” Slowly she turned, never to speak again. I looked down in my hands where it lay. The same lover he had had and now I have too. I closed my eyes and sighed as the fragrance of smoke began to take me away to her.
