Rules

Please keep your posts PG-13 and under:
I personally have no qualms when it comes to swearing; however, not everyone is okay with cursing or questionable content. Just keep your minds out of the gutter and we’ll have no problems.

No plagiarism:
It should be well known that plagiarizing another’s work is wrong. I find it rude and offensive for someone to believe they can get away with using the hard work of another for their own personal gain. Remember this: if you can find it, so can I.

Be kind to others:
This contest forum is meant to act as a haven for others to post their work and to receive critique and reward. It’s fair to assume that when one posts their work online, it can be viewed by many others, and many people will have different opinions of that work. So, keep in mind that I will not tolerate rude remarks or harsh criticism that goes above and beyond the normal call of duty of a critic, but also keep in mind that when you post, you are allowing your work to be judged by everyone who sees it.

Sugarcoating=No:
Being nice when giving advice to a fellow writer does not mean that you should fawn over every piece of writing you see. If you feel you have an opinion that should be heard, voice it, but I don’t want false flattery littering every page and every post. It doesn’t help the author grow if their head is filled with insincere praise.

Do not quote off the first page:
It bother’s me to see long strings of quotes stretching over the pages of the forum. If someone asks a question that is answered in these first few posts, simply direct them to where they can read to find their answer. Or, better yet, allow me to answer it myself. Let’s just try to keep house a little bit, I like my contests neat and tidy.

Please don’t ask if you can enter:
If you do ask I will be sorely tempted to answer no, because it means you either didn’t read the rules or you didn’t care to acknowledge them. Everyone is welcome here. Every author of every age with all forms of writing ability is wanted.

Check back frequently for additional rules:
I reserve the right to add rules as the contest progresses. Not having seen the rules is no excuse for having broken them.

Prompts

For the Short Story and Flash Fiction sections of this contest, I have provided some prompts you can use. I would like you to use one of these prompts, or you can provide me with an inspirational line or quote you would like to use as a prompt or theme for your story.

I can assure you that almost any line you'll give me will be accepted, but I would like to see it before you use it. Due to an enormous amount of failure to comply with this rule, I've made an anouncement (see Pg. 4) that says that any person failing to ask to use an original prompt before submitting will not have their entry counted for judging.

-I wish I was as invisible as you make me feel

-Before you point your fingers, make sure your hands are clean

-Her smile put the city lights to shame.

-Every sixty minutes you spend upset is a minute of happiness you’ll never get back.

-I feel like I've been here before, but I know I haven't.

-The lump grew larger every day, sometimes he swore it was moving when it thought he wasn't looking.

-There was no light at the end of the tunnel.

-If you don’t like me, there’s nothing I can do. Newsflash: I don’t live to please you.

-The night sky turned an ugly red, then black in an instant.

-Sin city wasn't prepare for the sin he was about to commit.

-She should have died, Lord knew her time was up a long time ago.

-The music was too loud, pounding in her ears, the beat in her chest.

-Every page was flaky and thin, too brittle to stand up to handling.

-A black car swerved around the corner and shot down the road in a moment. Red and blue flashing lights soon followed.

-The mirror was foggy, crowded full of shadows and mist.

-She felt it. The air was changing. Something was coming and it wasn't going to be pretty.

-Being deaf didn't mean he couldn't feel, couldn't see the accusations and the questions in their eyes.

Judging

This is the point scale by which your entry will be judged.

Plot: 10 pts.
Did you create an exciting storyline? Was it easy to follow, intriguing, and did it have a good ending? Did you tie up any and all loose ends?
Poetry: Did your poem have substance, was it interesting and thought-provoking? Did it have detail and metaphors that makes it one of a kind?

Creativity/Originality: 15 pts.
Was your entry creative, original, and captivating? Did you think up an idea that hasn’t been used before, or create a new take on an old concept?

Word Choice: 5 pts.
Instead of words like ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ did you opt for words like ‘delighted’ or ‘miserable’? Were you able to create images with your word choice? Did you utilize your words in a way that depicted emotions or detail well, without giant paragraphs of vocabulary?

Spelling/Grammar: 5 pts.
Make sure you know the difference between to, too, and two, or their, there, and they’re. We all make mistakes sometimes, but excessive misspelling looks unprofessional and mediocre. Make it at least seem like you put thought and hard work into your entry.

Character Development: 10 pts. (Exempt from Poetry entries)
Are your characters well developed, illustrated in good detail, and well used throughout the plot? Do they have reason and purpose, are they interesting or unusual? Make some attention-grabbing characters and your story will be that much more appealing.

Use of Prompt: 15 pts. (Exempt from poetry entries)
Were you able to incorporate the prompt or prompts into your storyline? Was the use apparent, yet subtle enough to aid your story? Did you make sure that the prompt was the basis of your story, rather than thrown in at the last second?

Total Points Possible: 60 pts.

The first post, is MINE!!

This is very interesting. I may find and want to use my own prompt, but I might not.

I shall try and help you get a banner for this.

I like cheese. It's very, very tasty. Plus, it's fun to say. All of life's mysteries can be solved by cheese.
I applaud you, truly, for you've assembled an enviable collection of prompts. I will try to enter without a doubt, but choosing from such a fine list will be difficult.

If/When my entry becomes solidified I should like to donate as well.
