Hello! Welcome to the 2009 National Novel Writing Month {NaNo} Hangout and Giveaway Thread!
I {xx__Tickle me IMO} am your hostess for this year, as [.days.] is occupied with her studies
abroad in Turkey. This is my first year running the thread, but third year participating in the event.
But enough about me. Let's get on with the show!

This brief spout of information was paraphrased from the event's website and
transcribed below, for your reading convenience.

What is this all about?
NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It is, by definition,
a "month of literary abandon", in which participants attempt to write a
50,000 word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who is this for?
You! Half the fun is having a community of writers writing rushed and
awful prose together. ♥

When is this going down?
Sign-up begins October First and writing begins November First.
In order to be a "winner", you must have {at least} 50,000 words
written by November 30th.

Why should I participate?
Why not? There are so many different reasons to participate! To quote the website,
"To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to
passages from your novel at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle
on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work."

Here you will find special events held by the thread. A few of these are
contests, in which there will be prizes. Others are just plain fun.
I hope you will participate in many, if not all, of them!

● October 1st through November 30th:
Sign-ups. Throughout these two months, you are allowed to sign-up to be a member of the
thread. That's right, even if you come in late, you can still be a part of the the fun!


● October 1st through October 5th
Kick-off! We will open up the thread and start off chatting for a
great and successful new year! Not really an event, but I thought I ought to add it, to make it
seem more official.

● October 6th trough 12th
Character Bio. Fill out this character sheet and PM it to me when completed.
Prize || 1,000g


● October 13th through 19th
Character sketch contest. Write a story of 1,000 words or less about one of your NaNo
characters. This should not be a part that will exist in your NaNo, as that would be breaking
the NaNo rules. Use this to fill in some background, show a scene that is not shown in your
NaNo, or any other aspect of your character or character interactions.

● October 20th through 26th
Diary entry contest. Write a journal or diary entry for your main
character. It can be for any day, month, and year. They could be doing something boring or
exciting. This entry can not be a part of your novel, as that would break the NaNo rules.

● October 27th through 31st
The final countdown! Again, not an official event, just waiting for the big day to come.
Chat up and have fun and talk about how excited you are (or are not).

This is where you will find the list of prizes. This prize pot relies heavily on donations
from the NaNo community. If you wish to contribute to the list, please send a
donation to FolksWagon, my mule.

What kind of prizes can I win?
● Event prizes: As mentioned in the schedule, there will be certain events you can participate in
in order to win gold prizes. For more information, refer back to that post.

● Completion prizes: Everyone who completes NaNo (hits 50,000 words) will receive a certain
amount of gold. The ammount has yet to be determined. In order to be eligible for this prize, you
must post in this thread when you have reached the goal before 12:00pmEST December 1st.

● Activity prizes: These prizes are reserved for those who stick around the thread and chat.
Since this thread stresses building a great community of writers, the larger prizes are given out
in this category. So I suggest that you be active and participate in the events. I am the final say
on who is active and who is not.

Also: I often don't post my novels online, and I understand if you don't either. If you choose
not to, then just leave the section where it asks for a link blank.

How do I find my time zone?
It's just easier if I have the time zones in GMT/UTC format. It's how [.days.] organized it last
year, and it's how I'll do it this year. Please go to The World Clock's Time Zone Converter
and follow the steps below:
● Put the date in as November 1 {daylight savings this year}
● Put the time as 2am
● Find your location and press "convert time".
This is to make sure that Daylight Savings does not mess you {or me} up when it comes
to listing everyone.

What do I do when I hit the word mark?
When you reach 50,000 words, please just post the code below in the thread:

Have you ever participated in NaNo before? If so, what has your experience been like? If not,
what are you most excited about in your first rushed noveling adventure?

Week two || October 10th-17th
Have you done any planning yet? Do you have outlines of your plot, a vague idea, or are just
planning to wing it? Or maybe you are doing something completely different. Tell us about your
adventures in novel-planning!

Week three || October 18th-23th
Have you composed a "soundtrack" to your novel yet? In other words, is there a list of songs
that have helped composed your novel? If yes, then what sort of songs are on it?

Alright, we have already talked about how excited we all are. But what about nerves? Is there
anything about the month that you are dreading? Are you worried about time restraints, or do

Ah! The sound of typing! How has getting started been for you? Are you having trouble finding

Sometimes, you just get truly and purely stuck. You may be lacking
direction, ideas or interesting characters. Want a fun way to solve this?
Try taking a dare

What is a dare?
Just like in truth or dare, a dare is challenge that someone can take. However, in
this case, all of the dares are designed to help push a novel along. They contain
various things- such as quotes, situations, or characters- that must be included
in the novel of the person who takes the dare. They can be very silly or very serious, it's
up to you! This sectionwas inspired by the dare post last year, which was inspired by the
dare thread on the NaNo site.

How will this dare thing work?
This section of the thread relies primarily on suggestions from participants like you. So please,
please feel free to suggest a dare. You can suggest these dares using the form below and
posting it in the thread. Each day, I will update this post with dares that have been suggested.

Okay. I want to suggest a dare. How do I do it?
Well, bolded question, I am glad you asked! Simply use the form below and post it in the thread!

Others are just download-able and fun things that may make writing easier. If you have a

Pretty self-explanatory. This site contains numerous prompts that are both interesting and fun.
They should easily get the ball rolling when you are truly in a pickle.

Can Teach || link
This site contains journal topic prompts, used by elementary school teachers. These can be
useful for putting yourself in the mindset of a character. This is especially great for determining
a character's opinions and thought process.

Name Help

Behind the Name || link
Arguably one of the best sites to use when naming characters. It has nationalities, meanings,
popularity by year, you name it. It even has a random name generator, which is beyond helpful
when you are simply clueless as to what to name a character.

Useful Programs

FreeMind || link
This free program allows the user to create mind maps for their stories, as well as other programs.
Here is a screencap of a map that [.days.] made to
plan for one of her NaNo novels. It's handy and easy to use. It's definitely worth the download.

Q10 || link
Q10 is a text editor that takes up the entire screen. It really helps you focus on just your story,
and not be distracted by the wonders of Solitaire and the Internet. It also has some nifty tools
that can help during NaNo. Definitely check it out!
