Here they are!
Thank You For Participating!

First of all, I loved reading all your entries. It was a lot of fun for me, and hopefully it was a lot of fun for you too.

Prizes

I'm increasing the prizes for this contest! whee I was planning to do this since a long time ago, but I didn't like the idea of people entering on mule accounts just to get more gold, so I didn't mention the new prizes until now.

gaia_crown Best Overall: 6bil 12bil
yum_bacon Best Enjambment: 4bil 8bil
yum_tamago Best Rhymed & Metered: 4bil 8bil
gaia_star Most Inspiring: 4bil 8bil
yum_strawberry Most Enticing: 4bil 8bil
gaia_diamond Most Intricate: 4bil 8bil
gaia_spoons Clearest Communication: 4bil 8bil

For everyone who entered and didn't win a title, I'm giving out 1bil each.

Total prizes for this contest comes to 90bil.

Math:
overall title (12bil) + other titles (8bil x 6) + ( number of participants (36) - number of title winners (6 b/c someone won two titles) ) x 1bil =
12bil + (8bil x 6) + ((36 - 6) x 1bil) =
12bil + 48bil + 30bil = 90bil

Scoring System

The scores are 8-digit numbers, with each digit/column representing the score for a specific category. The categories, in order from left to right, are: overall, enjambment, rhymed & metered, inspiring, enticing, intricate, clear communication, and grammar etc.. So if your score was 12345678, overall your score was 1, for enjambment you got 2, and so on. Although there isn't a title for grammar, I included it as a category because I felt it should be considered as well.

The highest score is a 9, and the lowest score is supposed to be 0, but there ended up being one -1. emotion_facepalm

My patience/enthusiasm for judging had ups and downs, so some days I might have been more lenient than on other days. Take your score with a grain of salt, and consider every score to be that number +/- 1. I also noticed that toward the beginning, I got really excited when there was any sign of enjambment or inspiration, so I might have skewed the numbers a little bit. I acknowledge that I rated harshly on grammar. twisted

If you want to know the score for your poems, just tell me in the thread, and I could PM it to you. If you ask, I could include constructive feedback. Then, if you feel like it, you could totally post your score in the thread - you know, if you wanted to. emotion_kirakira

Again, the scores are based on my values and tastes, so if you didn't get a good score, it might just be that our tastes are incompatible. 3nodding

With the holidays coming around, I thought I would spread the love and hold a poetry contest!

1. Introduction & Rules
2. Prizes
3. Entries

Please keep in mind I'm not very good at poetry, but I would do my best with the judging. My evaluations basically have 3 parts:
  • syntax/grammar/spelling/etc.
  • effect/how moved I am
  • personal enjoyment

If I did not pick your entry, please don't take it as a sign that your poem is bad. Two of the three things I'm evaluating for are subjective.

I should also mention, I find it difficult to interpret free verse poetry that has no rhyme (unless it uses obvious techniques, like meaningful enjambment). I also tend to not prefer rhyming that seems forced. I like lines that demonstrate clear communication, such that (almost) anyone could understand them; if I have to look up facts to get the gist of your poem, I might not view it highly. Length and subject don't matter. English. Up to two entries are allowed per person. Please post entries in this thread, or post somewhere else on gaia and link it.

(This goes without saying, but the poem should not turn up in a google search.)

yum_puddi Most of all, have fun! It's the holidays!

Deadline.

BAYONET FORWARD

Last ticket to your show in my pocket
I bought it from whats-her-name with the pretty smile
and oh, you close your eyes when you really mean it.
i guess that’s the take and the ******** of it
because sometimes it’s raining when theres water below it
and not a drop to read into
I am suffocated with my own desire
so maybe I should give it up, hand it over,
call this the last time
I’m taken in.

Put your hand over my forehead like you could feel my thoughts

Place your feet where we’ll meet the end and

Bayonet forward

The Earth Turns Dark

Our very own light source has faded and now it is black,
The unfriendly scenery makes me wish for light to come back.
I hear a woman's scream it must be a crime,
Thanks to the darkness, criminals boon at this time.

I rush and I turn: no time for introspection,
But with my light now gone, there's no sense of direction.

Creatures of blood lust are now on the prowl,
Please hand me my gun, knife, shovel and trowel.
I am trapped out here in the darkness of night,
I've decided to live: I've decided to fight.

Thanks exclaim heart

From Time to Time
By: Nyuka

Moving forward,
Moving backwards.
Today is tomorrow's yesterday,
Today is yesterday's tomorrow.

See into the future,
Look into the past.
Eternity stands still,
Time moves forward.

Dreams are for the future,
Memories are for the past.
Forever changing,
Never moving.

All exists within in the mind,
The mind creates time.
In time all things live,
In time all things die.

With youth comes spirit,
With age comes wisdom.
In the beginning we see all,
In the end we know all.

From time to time.

But here it is, anyway. biggrin

IDLENESS

I should be somewhere. Running.
Not here where I feel the moments. Wasted.
Waiting for novelty to rain. Searching.
I want to move but I’m stuck. Static.

It seems I have no reason. Waiting.
Apathy throws me to confusion. Wondering.
The world then carries on. Turning.
Even when I’m here doing nothing. Passing.

Silence is a lullaby. Teasing.
Stillness is its accompaniment. Unrelenting.
While everything is kinetic. Pressing.
I’m here wishing I could have their purpose. Grudging.

Left behind. Thinking.
Before, what was I doing? Remembering.
Did I have dreams, too, I was chasing? Pursuing.
But now long gone and forsaken. Forgotten?

I do not fancy sleep as before. Lying.
But death is the mercy of a listless soul. Hoping.
Is it easier to never start and expect? Hating.
If so, to exist is my crime and shall fall to oblivion.

No.

Once more, I want to try. Struggling.
Again, I’ll have to play my cards. Preparing.
Over and over, even failing. Enduring.
And for now, I’ll go. Advancing.

Murder

The moon shines a shady grey
Upon the dim green
All I do is pray and pray,
but his mind is sharp and keen

The night is nigh
Still I pray
There he lies
Still at bay

Silence surrenders sulking
I scream my fears for now
But wait, I hear him coming!
My body is ready to bow

My mind is breaking
Like a piece of glass
My fears are waking
Oh please, let it pass!

I scream for life,
yet he shows none
He swings the knife!
My life is done

I know this is a bit morbid considering the season, but it is a poem I am quite proud of. I might put up another entry soon!
