A SUE-table contest
A writing contest of obnoxious proportions

Introduce:

Hello one and all! My name is Imoto Lehcar [please address me as Imo]. This is the third contest I have hosted and I hope this will turn out to be my most popular and most fun! This isn't actually one contest. It is actually two contests combined into one spiffy, brightly-colored little package. In these contests, I will ask you to throw something away.

I want you to get rid of all concept of originality.

You heard me right. This is a contest to make me laugh. And what better way to make me laugh than to present me with the most ridiculous clichéd story or terribly obnoxious Mary Sue?

The Basic Info:

Contest one: Make a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu character. I want you to fill out a profile for a character who is a complete and utter Mary-Sue. For more information on this contest, see post #3

Contest two: Make a clichéd story! Write me a story that utilizes many clichés from the genre of the story you are writing. For more information on this contest, see post #4

Both contests start on: June 7th 2008
Contest One ended on: July 31st 2008 at 11:59 PM EST
Contest Two Will end on: August 31st 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

Contest for Characters:

Info:
A Mary Sue is a character who has very few visible flaws, very idealized or clichéd characteristics, and function as a wish-fulfiller of the author. In most prose, fanfictions, and roleplays, these are to avoided. However, for this contest, I want you to make me one in the most ridiculous fashion you can think of. Get as creatively uncreative as you can! There are many types of Mary-Sues, they can be either gender and they can be characters for original stories or inserts to any fandom. See the "resources" post for helpful links with more information and tools to help you create our horrifically wonderful character.

Rules:
+Fill Out the profile for your character below and post it in the thread.
+Do NOT PM your entry to me; it will be ignored.
+Bear in mind that this is supposed to be fun and your entry should read as a parody. Try not to take yourself too seriously.
+Respect all people in the thread
+Do not beg for gold
+Follow ToS

Entry Form:
This is what I want you to fill out for your character:

Username:
Character name:
Age:
Race:
Gender:
Appearance: Write at least one paragraph describing your character in detail.
History: I want at least two paragraphs for this. Describe your character's past in-depth.
Personality: Again, at least one paragraph. It can be a short paragraph however.
Weapons, Powers, etc: Describe any magic or weapon your character my have. If none, just put N/A.
Other: Please put any other information on your character here.

Judging Criteria
This is what I will be looking for as I judge your entries. Be mindful of them.
Use of Theme [30 points]: This is a very important category. Did you make use of the prompt I gave you? This is also if I think you had fun with this prompt, believe me, I can tell how much fun you had through your writing. I will be primarily judging on your Mary Sue in this category.
Interest [30 points]: I know that clichés aren't supposed to be interesting. But they can be if you make them so. This also extremely important. You will be given extra interest points if I laugh, roll my eyes, or run around the room screaming.
Grammar [10 points]: Perhaps not the most heavily weighted category. However, this is important. I should hope you know proper grammar by now. I care not on how young or old you are. You will all be judged the same on this.
Rules [5 points]: Did you follow the rules I set for this contest? All or nothing.
Total: 75 points

Contest one contestants:
I will except up to twenty thirty for this contest and no more. However, you may reserve a spot. [No slots will be reserved after slot 25. After that, it's a first-post-first-served basis.]

Contest for Stories:

Info:
This is a contest for clichés, and for parodying them. I want you to write me a story of any genre and make fun of it using clichés or plots typical of that genre. Get creative with it, have fun, read various clichés from the links on the "resources post" to get inspiration. The story must be between 1,000 and 7,000 words and it must make use of and possibly make fun of a plot device used far too many times. Some of these things can include: "A forbidden love", "angels and demons", "insane serial killers", or "it all turns out to be a dream". [the last one is one of my favorites, just so you know]

Rules:
+Post all entries in the thread, PMs with your entry in them will be ignored.
+All entries must be between 1,000 and 7,000 words in length. No exceptions will be made.
+Fill out the entry form I provided below and post it with your entry. If you do not post it with your entry, you will get no points for "rules". I hate docking off for rules, I really do. So please post the entry form. It's more important than you think.
+Respect all people in the thread
+Follow ToS

Entry Form:

Username:
Title of Entry:
Overly used plot devices used: [Just name one or two of the devices used in the story, you don't need to name them all]
Word Count:
Rating:
Entry:

Judging Criteria
This is what I will be looking for as I judge your entries. Be mindful of them.

Use of Theme [30 points]: Did you use the theme I gave you? Was it unoriginal, cliched, annoying, and yet somehow entertaining? This is how portrayed the prompt I gave you and made it your own.
Style [10 points]: Sorry! I hate this category too! However, it is a crucial piece to every story. It holds less importance to the others because it plays a lot into the interest category. However, I do want to here your voice in this piece. So bear in mind that I will be looking for it.
Plot and such [5 points]: This is not a category for how interesting or creative your plot is. No, this is simply judging on whether this was a story with a plot, setting, and other crucial elements or if it was simply a character piece. If it was a character piece, it belongs in contest one, not here.
Interest [30 points]: This is primarily on how your story grabbed my attention and kept it there throughout the entire piece. If it got laughter, eye rolls or anything of the sort, then you get bonus points. However, if I start to feel antsy and forced to read, points will be taken off.
Grammar and Spelling [10 points]: Perhaps not the most heavily weighted category. However, this is important. I should hope you know proper grammar by now. I care not on how young or old you are. You will all be judged the same on this.
Rules [5 points]: Did you follow the rules I set for this contest? All or nothing.
Total: 90 points

Contest two contestants:
I will except up to twenty-five for this contest and no more. However, you may reserve a spot. [No slots will be reserved after slot 20. After that, it's a first-post-first-served basis.]

1. Yxara- [Link to Story]
2. Exotic Dancing Politician- [Link to Story]
3. Slowly Falling Away- [Link to Story]
4. Jonni Mnemonic: [Link To Story]
5. DarkWyvernwings- [Link to Story]
6. Yee Ha Terra- [Link to Story]
7. Lili Marlene- [Link to Story]

All reserves will be notified two weeks before the deadline asking if they still wish to enter. If respond that they will not enter or they do not respond a week later, they're reservation will be taken away and the slot will become free.

Resources

These are links and sites that will help you form your entries for this contest. It also gives some more insight on what I'm looking for in your entry.

On Mary Sues
+Wikipedia- Mary Sue The Great Wiki's explaination
+Some Mary Sue Litmus tests: [1] [2] These tests were made in order to help writers avoid making Mary-Sues, however, they can easily work in reverse too. xD
+Another Explaination of the Sue
+[Link] This is a nifty little tool that can generate some basics of the Mary-Sue for you to build off of if you are feeling truly stuck. [This tool has made me decide: I am Jack Harkness's long lost little sister. Suck it Torchwood fans!]
+Mary Sue- Encyclopedia Dramatica Any one who is familiar with Dramatica knows that their articles are not at all nice, yet somehow amusing. And oddly informative.
+Mary Sue Bingo This is just plain fun. I can testify; this is a sleepover favorite. Anyway, each bingo square has some interesting traits in it that are accustomed to Mary Sues, and it can help in getting into the contest mood.
+A Mary Sue Tutorial This is made by the same girl as the bingo game. Also, this is what first inspired me to make this contest, after somebody posted this in a guild of mine.

On Overused Story Elements
+The Grand List of Sci-Fi Cliches This is pretty interesting to read through, if planning a sci-fi genre story. All credit to those listed on the site.
+Movie Cliches Some elements used in movies that are far too familiar.
+Detective Novel Cliches Even mysteries and action stories are suspect to it!
+Martial Arts and Kung Fu cliches Hi-ya!
+These are some interesting archetypes lists I've used. Because every story needs characters: [x][x][x]

*REMEMBER:
These are simply resources. If you do not wish to use them in your stories, by all means, go ahead. It simply is here to give ideas.

FAQ

"musicequalsoxygen"
Can I enter both contests or do I have to pick one?

You may enter both contests. And yes, that also means you are able to win in both categories. They will be judged and treated like separate contests.

"Raven Arrikanez"
for the story portion, do you accept fanfic or strictly original works? And same question for the character sheet, becuase I really have some bad mary-sues wandering around but they are pretty fandom specific.

If you want to write a fanfic, please approve the fandom you're writing for by me beforehand.

"QueenOfMidnightRoses"
Am I allowed to use my Mary-Sue in the story I plan to write? :]

Yes. By all means!

"DarkWyvernwings"
Are we allowed to enter more than once per contest?

No. I'm sorry.

"Exotic Dancing Politician"
I'm kind of confused on the Mary Sue thing. Are we supposed to just make up a character and make her follow all the stereotypes or are we supposed to get an already made Mary Sue and make fun of her by changing her perfections?

That's a good question and I'm glad you asked. I suppose you can do well in this contest doing either. Or you can take the stereotypes and make fun of them using your character. It's all up to you.

"RosesShadow"

~Er, question: For the first contest, are you required to only write up a bio or must you enter a story to accompany it as well? Didn't quite understand that part.

You can if you want to. But it isn't required. Consider the two contests entirely different entities.

"Caladhiel"

EDIT: And I was also wondering, can we edit it after we post it?

Yes, up until the judging date.

"Exotic Dancing Politician"
Are we allowed to mix genres?

Yes

"Exotic Dancing Politician"
What do you like and dislike in stories?

I like it when people write. I dislike it when people write just to please me. I know my prizes may be tempting and I know that part of the judging criteria is whether I liked it. But if you try too hard to make me like it, I will know. Just have fun with it and make sure it something you had fun with, and I will enjoy reading it.

"affirmedreality"
Can I make intentional grammar mistakes?

Basically, try to avoid it to the point where it makes me feel sick. Your story and character should make me feel sick, not your writing. And I need to be able to tell easily if it is intentional or not. Putting "grammar mistakes intentional" in front of your story doesn't work for me. I have to know. If not, I will dock off grammar points.

Quote:
Can I PM you my entry?

If you want me to ignore it, then of course! I will not accept PMed entries and I will not accept entries that were PMed and then later placed in the thread, because that would mean that you did not read the entire front page. I know, rude and bitchy of me, but it has to be done.

Feel free to ask questions to Imoto Lehcar through either post or PM. She will be more than happy to clarify, especially since most everything she says on the first page of a contest sounds like word vomit.

Ahaha. xD I've stalked you to your test thread a while ago and cringed at the deadline because it's so close to my last exam. But with this one, I now have well over a month. xD So count me in, and I shall try and make the best most cliched (D< *curses*) story.
