The Candlelight Service
I once went to a candlelight service,
When I was a child.
Hundreds of candles lined the aisles, and
Our way was lit by the flickering volume of light
At the front of the chapel, a brilliant display
Shone like jewels in the shape of a cross
The flames flickering in their coloured casing
Made a glittering array of dazzling light
But
It was so beautiful,
That it happened,
That the church was over-full that day
And we had to stand at the back behind the chapel
And it was too dark to read the Hyme book.
I remember the moment someone lit their candle
And sent the light along
Passing from neighbour to neighbour
And following it, a wave of song
I was only young
But I thought I'd seen a miracle.
Well, Lord, there was once a darkness in my heart,
Of grief and fear and disbelief
But somewhere, someone lit a candle
And the light was passed along
And one day, my neighbour held their candle out to me
And a fire leapt up in my heart
And now I can see
And all the world is song.
My only hope in life is that, just once before I'm gone,
I can turn to my neighbour and say:
"Light your candle and pass it on."
