Interesting story. I liked it. Though I voted a 4. There was little things about it that didn't make it a 5, but still really good. You should submit it into your school competition.

I read yours. I liked it, it was refreshing. I liked the 'population:' metaphor. I would caution against using common sayings, "cut through me like a knife" being one. And check the first two paragraphs for repeating words within a sentence or two ("The last of the sun’s light was catching the sea, giving the impression of fire. Orange light caressed my eyes." )
