I wrote a story on quizilla.com not too long ago.
the chapters are really short because it's not a real book, but they aren't the shortest things in the world.
I have 13 chapters and I sort of just ended it somwhere close to the end, I never really finished the way I wanted to.

wow this is really handy information, i'm currently in the writting process, i have a begining and an ending so i should just be coasting though it in a very short while. Hope i publish it 4laugh

You should also try looking for freelance work. It's how many author's, such as Anne McCafferey got started. It doesn't hurt to look in the writer's market guide http://www.writersmarket.com/ If you want to write for magazines, you can break down a long story into a serial. But you should consider that most places will want first publication rights, even if it's an online only magazine. It would still be a good way to get your work out there and get paid for it as well.
