I would allow my child to read anything.

Except for pornography.

Uh.. generally, pornography isn't something I'd associate with reading..

Except pornography can be written work.
Thus, you can read it.

Isn't that erotica? Apologies for getting terminology wrong there if I'm wrong.

Porn is just defined as something intended to arouse someone. Medium doesn't matter.

Simple put, it depends on the age of the kid and the material itself. This is too much a complicated topic to talk about at 2 in the morning (at least for me) and I won't go any deeper past the "depends on age/material" line.

Stop being so optimistic, it sickens me.

No really, it makes me want to throw up.

Stop it already.
Well I wouldn't want them reading play girl/ boy blaugh

"Indigo Dagger"
Cats can't read. So I would have no problem there.
Seconded, but if I did have kids they wouldn't be limited by what I would let them do. It'd be a social experiment,.

Vegeterrorist
Ask me how!
They won't read crap.

It may just be that your definition of 'crap' may not be your kids.. but.. you'll find out all about different personalities if/when you have kids biggrin

I say this because what my parents consider a good book is not always what I would consider to be the same. We have different tastes.

I wouldn't limit anything. I read war diaries at 6, and my mom doesn't care abou what I read, so why should I. If I didn't read stuff, then I would not be aware of anything in the world. Limiting a child makes them less alert, less alert means they end up unaware and unawareness, well I'm pretty sure we all know where that leads. Why should we set limits on reading especially, setting limits, limits vocabulary, though I can understand some vocabulary isn't what should be heard from a child, so what, tell them not to repeat it. Limits=bad.

The masses pray for world peace. Well, if you think about it, with world peace comes the end of the world. There will be no way to keep governments in check, thus bringing crime, poverty and corruption.

Ok so it's kinda controversial to what I said, I will restrict the one book, the DICTIONARY! I've seen so many cases where the child goes insane from reading dictionaries for so called 'fun'. It would be fine if they need it for homework and such, but for 'fun' is madness. I'm sorry but that seems to be the only thing that parents look away from, they never notice it, that child staying up 'till the early sunrise and then begining to read the frigging dictionary for fun, so far:49 children I know went insane from reading it for 'fun'.

Naw, I wouldn't keep 'em from reading something they're entertained by. But I'd discourage drug store pulp wink .

My mother is pretty fair about what I read, but i've read a few books that I wouldnt want my 11 year old sister to read until she turns 15, such as Clockwork Orange, or any of JT LeRoy's books (even though JT is my favorite writer of all times). And it's not because of the sex or language or blood, because I would have no problem if she picked up say... a friday the 13th movie (containing the usual sex/blood/cussing), simply because I know that seeing 2 people in a bed or a guy saying the F-word wont kill her. However, some of the content in some books would upset her, and I think that at 11 years old, she should stick to books aimed at kids and pre-teens. At thirteen, my opinion is that you know what you can and cant handle, so at thirteen, a kid should be able to read whatever books they want. However, letting a 9 year old read SALO is just plain bad paranting.

Porn. And I guess things that I thought might give them nightmares, because I can't deal with waking up at two in the morning to comfort them. However I have to admit that I don't want them to feel fenced in. They have to ask me before reading a mature book, I'll read it first, and deem if its appropriate. =P
