Until they're 16, I'm going to pretend I never saw them read pornography. And Twilight; they're not getting anywhere near that.

Just because your men are a bunch of whipped brit sissies doesn't mean american men are as easily beat. Well, some probably are, but they likely have british ancestry.
I'm keeping a library in the house. So, if (the hypothetical child) they want to read something, they can pull anything off of the shelves, so long as they put it back in its place.
They want to buy their own books? Fine, i'm not stopping them. As long as it's nothing, like propaganda or some odd s**t, whatever.
I'm a pretty open reader, and would do so with my kids. I wish my mother would be the same with me.

I'm your little whore doll, pixeled with no flesh...

I would never censor what my child would read. Ever.
Unless, of course, it has the words "moaning" every other sentence. Smut is the one genre I'd restrict until they were about 16, and even then.

It's an insomnia-inducing, coffee-indulging, anxiety-ridden month.
You're gonna love it.
As much as i wouldnt want to censor my childs reading (apart from naughty books obv) I would make an exception and throw away Philip Pullman...

I think the reasons should be obvious

I wouldn't care what they read. The age when they will start thinking about sex will come soon. Violence is everywhere, especially if I'm their mother (anger management problems!). Cursing? Ha, just let them read The Catcher in the Rye and say, "You ever get this bad, I'm shipping you off to the Marines."

I don't care if they read garbage like Twilight. It's their preference, and I'd be pissed as hell if my mom told me to stop reading James Patterson's mysteries or whatever.

Not than I plan on furthering my bloodline, I would probably let my child read whatever they damn well pleased. Of course if there was questionable content, I'd make sure they understood the difference between whats real and whats not, whats acceptable and whats just stupid to really try to do so they don't get 'confused' or try to use what the read or play as an excuse for doing stupid things- that s**t doesn't fly with me and I see right through it. They want to read about sex in middle school, fine whatever, but they better be ready for an EPIC 'TALK' so they know where they stand in that mess, they want to read about violence at whatever time, fine sure, but if they think they should start acting something out or modeling something... corrective action will be taken if despite my explanations of reality and fiction problems persist. They will be exposed to violence and what not anyway, I'd prefer to around when they are....

I don't have kids, 'cause I'm still a kid myself, but I wouldn't allow them to read anything that preached rascism, predjudiceness, or satanism.

Everything else is fine in my eyes as long as it doesn't teach people to hate other types of people based on their behaviors and skin colors. And the only reason I wouldn't like them reading satanism is because it scares the crap out of me.

Edit

I also wouldn't let them look at porn. Why? because that's not reading. Now if they want to go find a book that has smut in it every few pages, I wouldn't mind so long as they're mature enough to handle it. (I refuse to say 'old enough' due to the fact that I could handle it when I was eleven, but my cousin whose nineteen still can't even look at books where sex is involved without freaking out.) And just as long as they don't go getting any ideas if you know what I mean.

Especially violent ones-at which point I'd probably ground them for life-that and take away their X-box.

HEY!!!!
Can you write??
Do you think you know something clever for me to say in my signature?
If so PM it to me, and if i like it i'll give you gold!

I forgot another book series to mention that I wouldn't let my kids read if I ever had any: twilight.
I read the trilogy and thought it sucked and wouldn't want my kids anywhere near that sorry excuse for a story.
LOL, Nefas your avi is scaring me everytime you change it what did you do to the poor thing!!! rofl

Nothing.
I honestly don't think it's fair to limit what a child can or cannot read.
My mother hasn't put any limits on me, and I will not put limits on my children.

I've found that, a lot of the time, when a parent bans their child from reading a book it is simply because they don't understand what the book is about.
Agreed. If my kids (when/if I have them) wanted to read anything, then I would let them because if I told them they couldn't, they'd probably just end up reading it anyway, and my forbidding them from doing something would probably just make it seem more enticing.

That said, I would probably try to discourage them from reading things that had themes I didn't like, or do what my mum does when I do things that she doesn't agree with - just wrinkle my nose and ask WHY?

Erotica, not until they're older teens. If I catch them reading such things, I will hand over an extensive text book with many graphic STD pictures and force them to read it, with me hovering over their shoulder and reading it out loud. Use a goddamn condom.

Mild violence, I don't mind that. Gun sound effects annoy the fucking hell out of me, and kids seem to do that whenever guns are mentioned. No guns, please.

Language, fine once they're old enough to discern when it's appropriate to use. As in, don't cuss out the teacher. I will have to waste my time just to have a discussion with that teacher, who will accuse me of being an irresponsible parent. No thanks.

Drug usage will apply in the same manner of erotica, except it will be a book on the sickening effect of drugs. And they will have to endure a wasted Amy Winehouse concert.

You should see the other one wink Nah, this one came to pass after being declared the god of rape .. and I thought my imagination was bad.

NO TWILIGHT IN MAH HOUSE.

Just kidding. I would try to make sure that what my children are reading is appropriate for their age group, though I'd probably have a lax stance on it, (you know, just make sure my ten year old isn't reading erotic fiction.) Otherwise, I think that they should read what interests them. Of course, I'd suggest lots of good books to them, whether they're classics or things I think they'd enjoy! Then they could figure out on their own what's great literature and what's crappy.

I don't believe in keeping things away from my children (which I don't have yet). I believe though, that certain things must come with age...because certain things cannot be handled without a certain level of maturity first.

I will let my kids read fairytales without hesitation. Those don't bother me. I find it beautiful that my future children should have such an imagination.

I will let my children read about violence, but nothing excessive until they're older. Minor violence is natural to life. Even children understand such things.

I will let my children read a book containing death. I find it silly that some parents won't; kids are smart enough to grasp the concept of mortality. Most often they handle it better than adults.

I won't let my children read about anything having to do with sex, incest or whatever until they're older (I'm going to say like, 12). I'm sure that they'll understand it way before then, but I don't think it's good to let a kid get into that self. Sex, as I see it, is something that's easy to become addicted to. I would hate to expose them to something like that when they weren't ready..

I won't let my children read anything with excessive, or detailed violence until they're older (again, about 12). Obvious reasoning.

I am not, however, going to be one of those mothers who shelter's their children from everything. I'm not going to be frightened when my child comes home and says the word "damn". Kids are siimple, you explain that it's not a good word...and explain why. Usually they get it. I don't know. People often pass of children as being dumb things, when really the understand a good deal more than what we can imagine. It's just overexposure that can be detrimental.

ugh...I dunno.
