My character's name is Merrick. No immediate problems.

However, when his mother and her sister are pregnant, they are discussing what they want to name their babies. His mother decides to name him Merrick and explains to her sister the meaning of the name and why chose it.

My problem is, I don't know the meaning of Merrick. sweatdrop Some sources say "ruler of the sea;" some say "powerful ruler" or "famous ruler" something similar. All I know is that the name has English origins.

So, is there anybody out there who's familiar with name bases? I think the "merr" part has to do with water (like "maritime" has to do with water, or how "Maria" means "sea of bitterness" ), so I'm leaning towards the "ruler of the sea" definition...

I always thought it was some form of "mer" for sea and "rex" for ruler, but it seems to be a form of "Maurice," which a lot of sources say means "Dark Skinned Ruler" after a Byzantine regent or prince or something.

thanks for the information. very beneficial

Alright. So my story's themes, names and hierarchy of characters are kind of based on Norse mythology. So most of the character's names are the names of people from Norse mythos. However, one out of the three absolute main characters have names that don't come from mythological origins. I like his name (which is Melic,) though, but I found a name that would also suit him rather well, Mani, which is the name of the moon god or something like that, but I don't like it nearly as much. Should I change it to a name that suits the theme of the story more, or should I keep the name that I like better?

I don't know if this has been posted before but, I have found this website very helpful when coming up with name ideas. It's not just for surnames but, first names, and place names as well. Also there are Celtic names, and a variety of foreign names too; categorized by ethnicity. Heres the link. British Surnames

I'd go with the one you like better.

I am stuck on a name for this character. He's a bandit who makes his living stealing things from rich people and selling it off to help the poor. I want to give him a name pseudonym, since I picked a average sounding pseudonym for him to use and I want to change it.

Here's a tektek of his character design. Help, please? I wanted a good idea for a male name that he uses for a pseudonym.

I have a slight naming problem popped up in my writing. As you see, I have a Hindu Indian character who's a old guy, and he is a Tiger shapeshifter. He came from a clan of Tiger shapeshifters, and he acknowledges his clan pridefully. He lives in America working in a self owned store, and he acts as a bit of a Mentor character for the cast. But I am not sure what to name him. Any ideas?

A few Indian names I know (for guys at least) Siddarth, Shahrukh, Aditya, and Abhishek.

Thats all I have for now, I'll try to think of more!

Oh boy, there's a bunch. It'd be much easier if you have any specific preference.

For starters, here's my list [excluding the usual]:

Daniel
Esther
Aaron
Ruth
Eden
Jacob
Seth
Eliezer
Isaac
Timothy
Jericho
Nathaniel
Rhoda
Talitha

[And yes, I picked the ones I can pronounce right off the bat. If you want more... exotic names, there's an even longer list razz ]

Here's a site that has really helped me for years: www.behindthename.com Anything from meanings to name generators, it's there. Of course, the list is still growing, so it's not that perfect.

Hmm... How about Pancho or Francis? [I just thought of Pancho Villa when you said bandit razz ]

It really depends on what kind of pseudonym you want. It can range from something like Lemony Snicket to U.N. Owen [Unknown] to X.
