[I can understand the language thing though. Authors really don't need to write a whole other language for an alien race if they're prominent. That would be ultra tedious, and tedium makes a story sag. Before someone goes "OMG KLINGON", I do not mean to be all-inclusive with that previous statement. Everything else in the quote... yep, that makes sense.]

Don't bother giving your characters any Psychology because it is perfectly fine to make your protagonist kill her best friend and not even explain why just as it is perfectly okay for a villain to torture the protagonist for no reason.

Of course, I suppose you could change the culture up a bit, but one thing is universal: taboos. No society should ever go against basic morals, after all, even the most savage of human cultures had them (I mean, when in history did we ever think it fine to commit acts of incest or *****?). These morals should, of course, be your morals.

Wish-fulfilling stories intrigue people because everyone wants to know what you WISH you were like and what you WISH would happen to you.
