Kisho Yasashiku

"a**" Kisho mumbled as another Eve bumped against him in the hallways. The Eve of course paid him no mind as he continued on his way toward the classrooms. But of course since it was the first day back from summer there was no way in hell he was going to sit in any classroom. It was always so humid sitting with a bunch of Adam's, and honestly sometimes it just irked him to no end.

I mean what gives those Adam's the right to try and dominate everyone... Although it would be kind of nice to be dominated by one of them...

Kisho shook his head to clear his head before they become even more voulgure then they needed to be. Kisho didn't mind being submissive at all yet at times it would seem different since he was easily angered when other Adam's touch him without his permission. He continued on his way down the halls to get to his dorm so Maybe he could catch up on sleep. While doing so he couldn't help but notice the other males skipping out on class.

Hm what do we have here? Two Eves and one Adam. Maybe this year could be a little more interesting than the last.

Well what kind of role play do you want to do? I'm mostly in yaoi ones xP
Well, since we're on the subject of role playing, how many here find it as a useful creative outlet for character concepts?

I believe I do, but there's something about RPs on Gaia's designated forums that I just don't understand. Maybe I'm just ranting because things have changed since I was last active on the site, but it seems to me that nowadays "literate RP" means an overabundance of (usually contrived or at the very least highly typified) stories, full of text of so many colours it could melt your eyes, and surrounding every post from a character with a picture of an anime character (or real person), more obnoxiously coloured borders, and a few witty quotes that are supposed to have something to do with the character? (I guess?)

Why show a picture of your character every post if it's a literate RP? Shouldn't you be able to paint a picture of your OC with words? And what's with all the bolding of spoken text or italicizing of thought-text? I'll admit, I use italics to convey a character's thoughts as well, but it's clear enough to just add "...he thought" or "...these words repeated themselves in her mind" or something that gives the italic font some context beyond emphasis. It seems like lazy writing to me, and nine times out of ten I feel like the actual text is being overpowered by the way in which it is presented. I would go so far as to say that in most of these so-called 'literate' RPs, there is a reduced focus on the content of one's writing and too much focus on one or another bombastic form of displaying it.

*sigh* That's my rant. Thoughts? Feelings?

I saw that line and just thought "Oh my God yes".
I tried to join a roleplay recently and it asked for a picture. So I quickly scribbled down a picture that I thought was suitable, after all, I was intending to build up an image of the character throughout the roleplay. The owner then asked for a "more anime picture".

...what?

They have since begun this roleplay, with a massive picture of their character on each post. Why? You shouldn't have that much of a definite image of your character. The character needs to be able to grow, to expand, to be drawn with your words. My three-second cartoon should have been enough, in fact more than enough.

If you want pictures, go look at a picture book.

I know, right? 3nodding
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's frustrated by this trend.

I'd kind of like to try role play as a story building exercise/creative outlet. But I don't think I'd ever use it for character conceptualization. I mean... I like to go into a role play knowing as much about my character as possible. Not so much about their looks, which can be fudged over in any good RP, but knowing everything about their personality and maybe their backstory.
I don't like writing for someone until I feel like I know them. This is probably where I go wrong with my writing and why I always feel like I need help from an outside influence when trying to write character growth.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, I mean all characters are the products of their back stories. I do get what you're saying though, and I think when it starts becoming a problem is when characters are their back stories: when they become so defined by certain elements of their creation that they become typified.

Even then, you could probably have a character like that work as an allegory or something, but I think it might be difficult to make them relatable to the reader. I actually tried writing about the childhood of one of my darker OCs who I felt was kind of falling into that trap of becoming more of a caricature than a character, and I felt the resulting project was really helpful in fleshing him out because it provided a more human rationale for his motives. It also helped me to imagine how the character could have developed if some of the things in his past hadn't happened to him, and consequently gave me a better insight into his mindset, or how he might react to different hypothetical situations that could change him.
