“Just because you stand there, doesn’t make your hair black. Or your skin darker...not that it needs to be. It is kind of obvious... about ‘Chick’, I mean. Seriously, learn her name.”
“Shush. Callum-“
“Umm...it’s called a cough. Re-“
“Yeh, but-“
“Right, I can tell you about this now so.....”
***
“And?”
“And then ... And then... And then it all went to hell in a handbasket.”
“I think that moment went by a long time ago.”
“Meh.”
“This is stupid. I think I misheard. This involved sex, death, broken bones, more death, general human misbehaviour – though not necessarily in that order and yet this counted as a good run, despite the fact that it got worse? Not that I have any idea what a run is. But still...?”
“Yup”. For the merest moment, not much more than a few fractions of a second, the blue eyes seemed to see something in the distance that no-one else could. A shake of the blond head as a dvd was inserted and the horror film began to play and good spirits resumed. They should probably have had this discussion and watched the film earlier in the evening, but oh well.

This was actually whipped up for people who are already familiar with the characters.
Since you're not:
Thomas starts us off by moaning at his friend (James) for standing in the shadows. He points out the dark brown/black hair thing. Then, because he's Thomas, he jokes that the kid ain't James' despite the fact he knows how it works. And... James could do with laying off the pet names, we'll grant Tom that one.
James tells him to shush, and starts worrying.
Callum and James go back and forth for a bit.
Tom is distracting them - the 'now' refers to... I dunno... confidential limitations or something, I guess.
Colin questions, Tom brushes it off, Colin persists, it's all Tom from there on out.
